against his estranged wife.

The case was supposed to go to
trial next week in Newport News.
In June, Gaskins' estranged wife
accused the chief of pushing her
following an altercation in Newport
News.
Veronica Gaskins did not
object to the prosecutor's request to
drop the charge.

fighters battling a warehouse fire.

Crews were called to this
warehouse on Cleveland Avenue around
7:30 last night.
They found a mini-van and a
car burning inside the building.
Firefighters say no one was
hurt and the building did not have any
structural damage.
The cause is still under

not what it used to be.
As a result, organizers are
taking some drastic measures to
survive.

Next year, the festival is being
cut in half from ten days to four or
five.
It will also take place over one
weekend rather than two.
Organizers say they had no choice.
The festival has been losing
money the last few years.
This past one for example is at
least ten thousand dollars in the red.
The situation at Victory Stadium
contributed to the problem.
There was no big concert there
this year and as a result button sales
were down twenty percent.

charge assault charge against has been
dropped.

An accident at the New River Castings
plant was one of the top stories of the
year. An explosion in March killed
three workers.

The City of Lexington lost a historic
landmark. The Presbyterian Church where
Stonewall Jackson once prayed caught
fire and gutted the interior. The
steeple toppled as firefighters fought
the flames.

A month later, Lexington suffered
another tragedy. A small plane crashed
in the heart of the city. Both men on
board died. No one on the ground was
hurt.

The shootings at the Backstreet Caf� in
September brought Roanoke attention
throughout the world. Ronald Edward Gay
later pleaded guilty to killing one
customer at the gay bar and wounding
six others.

And finally, we couldn't talk about the
year 2000 without mentioning the Y2K
bug. There was concern that older
computers and devices wouldn't
recognize the year 2000, but in the end
the bug didn't bite. No major problems
were reported.
