GRAPHIC=Shooting Lynchburg Police are


investigating a malicious wounding that
took place Sunday morning around 10:30
on Newberne Street.

According to a press release, 35
year-old John Preston Purvis told
officers that he had been shot by 55
year old Larry Thomas Ferguson of
Forest.

Purvis was taken to Lynchburg
General Hospital with gunshot wounds to
the chest.

He is listed in stable condition.

Police believe the incident is domestic
related. They're still investigating.

Authorities say a gold Contour,
driven by 96-year-old Roy A. Woods of
Blacksburg -- attempted to change lanes
and clipped a blue Sable.

The gold car then crossed over
the median and struck a white Corsica
head on.

performance speed boat driven by Mark

of a house boat near bouey marker R-24.

still figuring out what caused a house
fire.

The blaze broke out around 5:30
yesterday afternoon in a home in the
51-hundred block of Carter Grove Road.

Officials believe the fire
started in the garage and spread to the
attic.

The residents got out safely.

No one was injured, but two
firefighters were treated for heat
exhaustion at the scene.

Government Accountability Office
reports the average college student
spends nearly nine-hundred dollars a
year on textbooks.

The report says textbook prices
have increased 186 percent since 1986,
while consumer prices rose only 72
