We begin tonight with news
concerning the NCAA - the governing
body of college athletics.
Too many times the NCAA means
well, but can't quite follow through.
Such is the case tonight.

Today the NCAA announced that it
will allow Florida State to use
its Seminoles nickname in post-season
play afterall.
Florida State officials
threatened to sue the NCAA over its new
policy of that restricts Native
American nicknames.
The N-C-A-A says allowing Florida
State to use the Seminoles recognizes
the relationship the school has enjoyed
with the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The
tribe already has said it supports the
use of the nickname and helps the
university with its celebration of the
Seminole culture.

new when Al Groh got his big raise last
week and passed Frank Beamer on the
coaching salary super highway that he
would be in the fast lane very long.

August 5th Virginia Tech has offered Frank a
:00 new $2 million dollar deal for the
next seven years. Beamer is currently
making 1 point 3 million a season under
that contract he signed in 2000 when he
had one foot over the state line into
Chapel Hill..
Beamer, who's 58, is starting his
19th season as the head coach of his
alma mater.
The hope is to get the deal done
before the season opener on September
4th, but Beamer's will not sign it
unless he gets more money for his
assistants, as well.
Some of Tech's assistants are
underpaid when compared to the SEC
where seven schools paid their
assistants an average total of $1.3
million in 2004.

for Cincinnati head hoops coach Bob
Huggins.

has been ordered to resign as or be
fired.
Huggins was given 24 hours to
step down in a letter sent to him
by the school, according to an
associate who wants to remain
anonymous. Huggins upset school
president Nancy Zimpher when he was
arrested on a drunken driving charge
last year. He was placed on unpaid
leave last summer and returned to coach
the team last season.
Don't feel too bad for him - when
he steps down he's get a $3 million
dollar settlement.

Football Extra Preview Tour.

VO-NAT Chris Watts led his team to a 10
and oh record a season ago before
bowing out to eventual State Champion
Salem in the playoffs. That was the
Divsion 4 playoffs, this season Liberty
is back in the Division 3 ranks a place
that the Minutemen have had a lot of
success in the past.
Coming up tonight on News 7 at 6
we will hear from coach Watts about
dropping down as well as his comments
on Darryl Robertson who has already
committed to Virginia Tech to play his
college ball. Liberty will be counting
heavily on their big man if they want
to make another run at a state
championship.

Virginia's capitol today to show their
support for the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

NASCAR executives touched down in
Richmond this morning for a
presentation and tour of the proposed
site just off Interstate 95.
This afternoon fans rallied in
Capitol Square while NASCAR officials
met with Governor Mark Warner.
