Amidst all the talk of bringing US

officials announced they're sending
1500 MORE soldiers here to provide

elections later this year. But Iraqis,
already beseiged by insurgent violence,
woke up to a new crisis:

Followers of Shiite cleric Moqtada

this morning - killed hours before in
overnight clashes with rival Shias
supporting the Iraqi government.

As fighting between the two opposing
Shia sides quickly spread to Baghdad

Iraq......

the Iraqi Prime Minister made a
late-night appeal for calm.

And received unexpected support from
al-Sadr himself:

as he called publicly for unity instead
of revenge...

This as Iraqi leaders entered the final
hours of negotiations before the
midnight deadline to present a draft
constitution to parliament - a
constitution opposed by al-Sadr.

(LARA ON-CAM CLOSE - coming)

After weeks of wrangling and
last-minute delays, Iraq's leaders are
hoping to push through the new
constitution in spite of continued
objections from Sunni leaders and other
minority groups. The danger is that

instead of uniting the country, the
constitution will deepen already
dangerous divisions between the
different communities.
