GRAPHIC=FFE Good evening everybody and

welcome to another season of Friday
Football Extra. Tonight, we fire up
our 22nd season of the best in high
school football in southwest and
central Virginia.

Now this was supposed to be a
rain free opening night, and even
thought the wet stuff made an unwelcome
appearance tonight, our crews still
managed to hit the road and bring back
the highlights from Bluefield to Max
Meadows to Lynchburg to Victory
Stadium.

In the next half hour we'll have
the highlights of 7 games, plus the
first Super 7 of the season and we'll
tell about this year's contest that can
get you and a friend to the ACC
championship game in Jacksonville.

GRAPHIC=C'BURG/RADFORD We begin tonight with a coach

entering his 35th- season at Radford in
Norm Lineburg and a another beginning
his second season at Christiansburg in
Tim Cromer.

The Bobcats played host to the
Blue Demons on opening night at Bobcat
Stadium.

*CG ffeloc Radford
Christiansburg vs. Radford On a damp August evening Lineburg :00 took the field for his 47th overall
year in coaching.

But on the other side Nick
Thompson would get his own team fired
up, and we;ll hear more from him all
night long.

The Bobcats open up the action in
the first quarter as Bryan Holbrook
gets the handoff to Ben Chandler and he
will over the middle and pick up some
nice yardage, but those plays were few
and far between for Radford.

The Demons would take over on
their 14 yard line and Andrew Hoffer
will hand off to Thompson, and watch
him take it off the right side and
stretch this run out for 21 yards.

Several plays later, Thompson
will again bounce one outside, down the
sideline and this time he gets in the
endzone for the 12 yard score to make
it 7-to-nothing.

The Bobcats with possesion on
their own 38 will have Caleb Meeks at

the controls, but his pass his picked
off by who else but Thompson. He gets
it at midfield, picks up some nice
blocks and he will take it all the way
to the house for the score. It's now
14-to-nothing Blue Demons.

Christiansburg would begin the
second half with a 71 yard drive
featuring this Hoffer run around the
left side. He will pick up 22 yard on
the carry before he's stopped.

*CG 851 FINAL SCORE

A couple of plays later, Chad
Chapman takes the handoff to drive in
from the one and it's a 21-to-nothing
game.

The Blue Demons win it
28-to-nothing.

Carroll Co. vs. Floyd Co. The Floyd County Buffaloes roared :00 into their home opener hoping to
improve over some of their preseason
scrimmages.

The Buffs would make a statement
right off the bat in the first quarter
as John Mathis takes the handoff and
picks up 57 yards as he hits the left
side and rolls right at us before he's
knocked out of bounds. The Buffs are
in business deep in Carroll territory
at the 23.

That led to this one yard TD run
by Kevin Baker. Floyd is on top
7-to-nothing in thet first quarter.

Carroll County would respond with
a 40 yard punt return. Brad Austin
fields the ball and does a nice job of
eluding defenders as he finds the
sideline and gets into Floyd territory.

That set up this 15 yard
touchdown scamper by Willie Yates and
Carroll comes back to tie the game at
seven-all.

Floyd County got the pass going
again. This time Cody Burrier makes
the catch on the pass from Matthew
Browning and the two hook up for 28
yards.

Mathis would later finish off
that drive with a 5 yard touchdown run
and that puts the Floyd on top 14-to-7
at that point in the second quarter.

Carroll County would not be
denied tonight though as Yates takes
the handoff and he will break it to the
outside for 26 yards as the Cavs are
again in scoring position.
*CG 855 FINAL SCORE

Joel Armentrout would get in on
10 yard score to give Carroll the
momentum and eventually the win as the
Cavs beat Floyd 31-to-22.

(END SOT) It takes one about two steps

inside Graham high school to feel Coach
Carlock's presence. The hall of fame
coach who watched over young men for 31
seasons now watches over the foyer of
the high school and those who continue
to walk the halls.

BITES OF PLAYERS

Carlock won two state titles at
Graham - and his teams won 244 games in
his 31 year tenure. The school is
honoring the coach this season by
having him grace the cover of all of

the home game programs and also with a
decal with a special decal on thier
helmets.

BITE OF COACH

NAT SOUND

For the first time in more than
three decades the G-Men boarded the
team bus after their team meal without
Carlock.

His friend Doug Marrs is now in
charge of the Graham program after
serving as Carlock's assistant for 25
years.

BITE OF COACH

The 11 thousand fans in
attendance observed a moment of silence
before kickoff.

After that Bluefield would waste
absolutely no time as quarteback Jerome
Powell scurries down the far sideline
on a keeper as he dives into the
endzone to complete the 41 yard
touchdown run. It's 7-to-nothing
Beavers.

Graham had a tough time moving
the ball in the first half as Ronnie
Workman gets sacked for a five yard
loss.

The Beavers kept their momentum

alive on the next possession as
Jonathan Payne hauls in a 30 yard pass
from Powell to extend the Bluefield
lead to 14 to nothing.

But the G-Men would turn things
around as Robert Henry takes a 12 yard
Workman pass into Beaver territory on
this play.

Later in the same drive Matt Yost
runs a Workman pass 20 yards down to
the Bluefield six yard line to set up a
G-Man score.

Henry would fight in for this 3
yard TD, the first ot 3 unanswered
Graham scores as the G-Men mount an
amazing comeback to win one for Coach
Carlock 21-to-14.

That turnover would lead to this
