One community activist points out

Control agent to break up a fight on
Interstate-64 Friday morning.
Jerry Dove was driving east near
Low Moor when he saw a helmet flying
through the air out of the corner of
his eye.
Someone had tossed the helmet
trying to break up the fight.
Two men- -part of a private
paving crew- -were involved in a
dispute.
One of them had pulled a gun on
the other, and fired one round into
ground.
A-B-C Agent Dove crossed the
interstate on foot with his service
revolver and badge in hand.
He took the shooter into custody.
The other man was charged with
assault.

(END SOT) The disappearance and murder of a
little girl in Rockbridge County made
headlines.
Authorities spent five days searching
for 11- year- old Phadra Carter.
Her body was found in a shallow grave
in Botetourt County.

Her step-father's brother, Billy Layne
was charged with capital murder. He was
convicted, but avoided the death
penalty. In March 1994, a judge
sentenced Layne to two life sentences
in prison.
Roanoke City attempted a hostile
takeover of the Roanoke Gas Company.
For ten days both sides waged a media
war against one another.
The gas company was the apparent winner
of the public's support and the city
finally threw in the towel.

It was also the year of a very public
argument between local television
stations and cable companies over
retransmission consent and cash
compensation for local TV signals.
The cable companies held their "NOCASH"
position and all four network
affiliates remained on the major
cablesystems.

In November, the longtime host of
WDBJ's mornin program passed away. Irv
Sharp was 78 years old.

And that's exactly what Irv did for
more than six decades.
In radio, he reigned as Dr. Pepper's
Silver Dollar Man pitching the
softdrink on more than 100 stations.
Later, on WDBJ television, he teamed up
with Don Reno, Red Smiley and the
Tennessee Cutups to bring viewers the
Top of the Mornin' Program.

western Virginia who grew up with him,
