landmark conviction, and also helped
change the landscape of courtroom
coverage in Virginia.

Soering was convicted and sentenced to
two life terms in prison.

His girlfriend, Elizabeth Haysom, is
serving 90 years in prison for her role

in the murders.

The trial was part of a two year
experiment of putting cameras in
selected courtrooms.

courtrooms has been allowed by state
law, since 1992.

Douglas Wilder was the grandson of

Governor's office and on January 13-th
1990, he became the nation's first
black elected governor.

Mary Sue Terry also made headlines in
becoming the first woman to hold
statewide elected office.
