four-thousand more people displaced by
Hurricane Katrina.

At least one thousand evacuees
are already in the state.

Tuesday evening.

The Hotel Roanoke has agreed to put

headed to Jackson, Mississippi to help
in the relief efforts.

225 members of the Virginia Army
National Guard left Richmond after

administrative and medical processing
yesterday.

The soldiers are expected to be
gone about a month.

They'll provide security, help on
search and rescue missions and clear
debris.

These troops are from Lynchburg,
Lexington, Charlottesville, and
Harrisonburg.

About 190 members of the Virginia
national guard are already at work in
Louisiana.

talk about options. Among them: delay
the purchase of new busses, put an
energy conservation plan in place and
charge a fee for field trips.

Shortening the school week
has already been ruled out.

The school board must vote on the
measures at a future meeting.

canceling all field trips that use
school buses until further notice.

Students and staff at Westside
Elementary School have to put up with
the final leg of construction being
completed as the school year gets

Yesterday, city council voted
unanimously to keep the 100-year-old
fire station number one open on Church
Avenue.

The original plan was to shut down
stations one AND three, and move them
inside a brand new station to be built
on Elm and Franklin.

Council still approved plans for
construction on the new six-million
dollar station, which many residents
say is just a waste of money.

Sheriff's office is holding a relief
drive for police, fire and rescue

personnel in Mississippi.

Several deputies are driving a
trailer on Thursday full of boots and
clothes.

If you'd like to help, drop off

busy battling a blaze at a Schewel's
distribution warehouse.

VO-NAT Firefighters were called to the


building on John Capron Road just
before nine yesterday morning.

Crews found chairs, sofas, and
other furniture on fire.

About 30-employees were inside
the building but all made it out.

Company officials say there's no
structural damage but most of the
furniture stock was damaged by flames,
smoke or water.
