Yesterday, city council voted
unanimously to keep the 100-year-old
fire station number one open on Church
Avenue.

The original plan was to shut down
stations one AND three, and move them
inside a brand new station to be built
on Elm and Franklin.

Council still approved plans for
construction on the new six-million
dollar station, which many residents
say is just a waste of money.

Firefighters were called to the
building on John Capron Road just
before nine yesterday morning.

Crews found chairs, sofas, and
other furniture on fire.

About 30-employees were inside
the building but made it out alright.

It took firefighters about

20-minutes to put out the blaze.

Company officials say there's no
structural damage but most of the
furniture stock was damaged by flames,
smoke or water.

increase in viral upper respiratory

infections now that school has started.

treated patients with respiratory
infections and sinus problems.

Doctor John Moore at Carilion Pediatric
Medcine in Botetourt County says he has

symptoms include a fever up to 102
degrees and sore throat. Some children
may also have stomach aches, vomiting
and a rash. Strep throat is highly
contagious. If you think your child has
it, Doctor Moore says it's important to
get them checked so they can get the
proper treatment.

identified, although investigators said
James Lewis was a strong suspect. He

shops in Birmingham, Alabama, the
restored 611 locomotive returned to
Roanoke in August. A large crowd
gathered to welcome it home. The engine
was soon back to work,

Yesterday, city council voted
unanimously to keep the 100-year-old
fire station number one open on Church
Avenue.


The original plan was to shut down
stations one AND three, and move them
inside a brand new station to be built
on Elm and Franklin.

Council still approved plans for
construction on the new six-million
dollar station, which many residents
say is just a waste of money.

inside the Jefferson Center.

Officials say construction could
take about a year.

Firefighters in Lynchburg battled
a blaze at a Schewel's distribution
warehouse.

Firefighters were called to the
building on John Capron Road just
before nine yesterday morning.

Crews found chairs, sofas, and
other furniture on fire.

About 30-employees were inside
the building but all made it out.

Company officials say there's no
structural damage but most of the
furniture stock was damaged by flames,
smoke or water.

Some evacuees from the Gulf Coast
have arrived in Roanoke.

A group of Roanokers drove down to
Mississippi and picked up 14 people and
three pets.

The Hotel Roanoke has agreed to put
them all up for a week, free of charge.

Tomorrow, several Montgomery
County sheriff's deputies will drive a
trailer full of boots and clothes to
Mississippi.

If you'd like to help, drop off
supplies at the Sheriff's Office.

And the New School in Blacksburg is
collecting school supplies for 400
displaced children headed to Mobile,
Alabama.

That drive will be at the Kroger on
South Main Street until Friday at noon.
