Fire in a scrap yard on 13th
Street sent a column of black smoke
into the air over southeast Roanoke
just before noon.
Battalion Chief Bill Obenchain
called it "your typical salvage yard
fire, with plenty of stuff to burn."
Weddle Salvage specializes in
vehicles.
Some of them contain flammable
material and become saturated with oil.
The cause remains under
investigation, though Obenchain said he
believes the fire may have been started
by sparks from a metal cutter.

(END SOT) their unlikely ACC Odyssey at home
against the Duke Blue Devils.
Since that historic win Tech has
captured an ACC title and the Hokies
are yet to lose on the road in the
conference,
The Hokies are favored by 20 for
Saturday's game in Durham - but one
Hokie in particular knows that if
nothing else - the game will be
physical and the Tech players will get
an earful from the always creative
Dukes fans.

To make matters worse for Duke -
the Blue Devils are coming off a
24-to-21 season opening loss at East
Carolina.

Florida State has had to do its
share of learning over the past few
years. The win over Miami on Labor Day
night not only ended a six game losing
streak to the Canes, but it kept FSU in
the National title hunt - the only race
that matters in Tallahassee.
