The meeting was held in response to
the recent boating accident that killed
Lawrence and Judith Lewis.

The American Red Cross in
Christiansburg was told to leave its
building by the end of the month.

The group's lease was up, but a
spokesperson says the news couldn't
come at a worse time.

Katrina victims are starting to
trickle into Montgomery and Floyd
County every day.

Leaders did find a new home
yesterday.

The chapter will move to a suite
on North Main Street in Blacksburg.

Amateur Video Last weekend, 10-people from the :00 newly formed group, "Let it Begin with
Me," loaded into five vans and headed
to Mississippi.

They brought 14-evacuees.

After being profiled on News7
earlier this week, donations came
pouring in, but people wanted to donate
to specific victims.

Something the group says can not
be done.

They says all donations will be
spread equally among the victims.

his car.

February Joseph Slawney was found guilty

of failing to yield the right of way to
a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Slawney hit the student on
Washington Street in front of Cassell
Coliseum last February.

J.J. Larson, a tech tennis
player, suffered a broken collar bone
and severe bruises.

Yesterday, Slawney was ordered to
pay a 200 fine.

He's appealing the conviction.

to leave their pets behind when they
evacuated New Orleans.

There's now an organized effort
to help rescue them.

Animal shelters across Virginia
are offering to take displaced pets
into their kennels.

The Richmond Animal League sent
three volunteers to Louisiana to help.

They've found many evacuees left

food and water for their pets before
they left and many pets have been found
in good shape.

However, officials say dangerous
flood waters and other environments
pose serious health threats.

Once pets are found the main goal
is to re- unite them with their owners.

offering the Ora-Quick test yesterday.

The test requires taking a swab from
inside the mouth and the results are
ready in 20 minutes.

Officials says the test is more than
99-percent accurate and it's the only
test that can detect HIV 1 and 2.

cents a gallon is in state taxes.

However, that could change.

calling for a temporary rollback of
that tax-

Two state Republicans, Delegate Ben
Cline and Senator Steve Newman
yesterday said they're calling for a
60-day moratorium on the state's motor
fuels tax.

Approving the gas tax suspension

requires a special session of the
General Assembly.

NASCAR driver Hermie Sadler
unveiled his number 92- "Kilgore for
Governor" Chevrolet yesterday.

He'll drive it in the Subway- 500
next at the Martinsville Speedway.

Emporia native Hermie Sadler says

he's known Kilgore for a long time and
is happy to campaign for him..

But he says racing with Kilgore's
name on the hood will add some pressure
to next month's race.

remembered this weekend,

were visiting a relative's house in
Michigan when it blew up Saturday.

The pastor of the Bryant's
church in Giles County says the

have arrested three people in the
home-invasion robbery over the weekend
of an 87-year old Montvale woman.

Gravely is among those charged with
sexually assaulting and robbing the
elderly victim, along with 19-year old
Raheem Zelos Langhorne.

The two are said to be cousins
from Roanoke.

The third suspect, Edward Charles
Hatchel is also in custody.

The three allegedly stole the
victim's debit card and tried several
times to get money from her Wachovia

Bank account.

called to a bank yesterday afternoon
but it wasn't for a fire.

The crews were called after four
employees opened the night deposit box
and began to feel nauseous.

A hazmat team went out to the
Bank of America on Melrose Avenue, but
did not detect anything unusual.

Two of the four employees were
sent to the hospital however, employees
at the bank say there were no serious
injuries.

GRAPHIC=Police Chase A car chase that began in


Lynchburg ended in Bedford County -- on
a bicycle.

Lynchburg police chased this
Pontiac after its driver Garod (Jared)
Duckett reportedly drove off from a gas
station without paying.

Because the car was going so
fast.. police called off the chase.

Minutes later, Duckett though
crashed into a parked truck in Bedford
County along route 460.

The driver then reportedly got on
a bicycle that was in the back of the
wrecked car, and kept on going- but
police caught up with him.

Both Duckett and driver of the
truck he hit were NOT seriously
injured.
