homeless after a four alarm fire
destroyed their apartment building
early this morning.

Firefighters from Glen Lyn,
Narrows, Rich Creek and Celenese
responded to the Westmoreland
Apartments shortly before 4 -AM.
Residents were forced to evacuate
the building on Old Virginia Road.
Authorities say everyone got out
safely.
However, the building is heavily
damaged.
It included three apartments and
two businesses.
No word yet on what caused the
blaze.
Authorities say a home is being
made available for the displaced
residents.

Wilburn says the families trust
in God is helping them cope.
Last Saturday night an explosion
at a house near Flint, Michigan killed
six of the Bryant family children,
ranging in ages from 19 to two.
Rebecca, Joseph, Neimiah,
Martina, David, and Jackson.
Two other children, Sarah and
Caleb were injured, but are said to be
doing better.

police officers gathered in Salem
yesterday to remember those who died on
9-11.

Hundreds came to Lake Spring Park
yesterday evening to remember the
events on September eleventh.
Salem city officials say the
attacks on the twin towers brought
citizens closer together as a nation,
as a region, and as human beings.
The program was titled, "In Honor
and Remembrance: A Salute to America's
Heroes".
Many of the speakers included
remarks about the devastation of
Hurricane Katrina.
Saying the link between the two
is substantial, in the way that both
tragedies have brought the country
closer together.

creating a permament memorial for a
slain civil rights leader.

VO-NAT Last week, the city unveiled the
drawings for the new Martin Luther King
Junior Memorial Bridge and Park.
Council members voted last year
to rebuild the city's *First Street
Bridge* as a memorial to Doctor King.
Officials say the next step is
getting approval from the Martin Luther
King Junior Foundation in Atlanta.
If all goes well, they hope to
begin advertising for construction
early next year.

heating costs expected to go up this
winter, those on a fixed income are
finding it harder to get by every day.
But, some Rocky Mount residents
may soon get a break.

prescriptions and stacks of monthly
bills, Shirley Rakes can't afford to
waste money.
But, that may be what she's
doing, each time she pays her water
bill.
That's because the town of Rocky
Mount charges its residents a minimum
three thousand gallons of water each
month -- regardless of how much they
use.
Only residents who meet certain
criteria, like age and income will be
able to qualify.
And although the program will
save residents a few bucks a month, it
will cost the town about six-thousand
dollars a year.
Officials say it's worth it.
