after a caller said there were pipe
bombs on the Roanoke campus.

Construction workers were also
evacuated from the site of the new high

No explosive devices were found.

This is a sampling of the kick-off
Pep Rally celebration on campus.

Several hundred students turned out
for the event, many wearing orange and
maroon.

The celebration also had a serious
tone.

For every HokieZone t-shirt sold last
night, one dollar will go to the Hokies
United Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.

Donations will also be collected at
Saturday's game.

The goal is to raise one-hundred
thousand dollars.

(END SOT) 1964 - the construction on the original


west side of Lane Stadium had been
underway for just a few months when
this film footage was taken.

Replacing Miles Stadium with Lane
was a massive undertaking for the
times.

And much like this weekend, the
stadium opened for business before it
was completely finished.

On September 24th of 1965 - the
Hokies broke in the facility by hosting
Maryland in a freshman game.

The 35 thousand 50 seat stadium
was officially dedicated a month later
in October of 1965 - but construction
wasn't completed until four years after
it began in the summer of 1968.

The total cost was three and a
half million dollars - and most of the
time - the stadium was half empty.

This weekend - there won't be any
empty seats - as fans get their first
look at the Castle beside Cassell
Coliseum that cost nearly $50 million
more than the original stadium stadium
itself.
