manning checkpoints and providing
security in the area round Gulfport,
Mississippi.
The men say they were shocked by
the devastation, and impressed with the
welcome they received from residents.

just part of Virginia's Hurricane
Katrina task force. The group included
servicemen and women from Roanoke,
Lynchburg, the new River Valley, and

died when a trench collapsed on top of
them.

The accident happened yesterday
morning near the intersection of 15th
and Magnolia Streets.
According to the city manager,
the two were putting in a sewer line.
It took emergency crews several
hours to get both of the bodies out of
the ground.

County murder trial is now in the hands
of the jury.

Livingston "Bud" Pritchett is
charged with first degree murder in the
death of 57 year old Estel Singleton.
He's accused
*CG locator Montgomery Co. of shooting and robbing Singleton at
April 1997 the Ironto reststop back in 1997.
Pritchett was originally
convicted of the murder, but it was
overturned by the Virginia Supreme
Court.
The jury will begin deliberating
at 9 am.

She was standing in for her
mother, Coretta Scott King, who was
unable to attend after suffering a
stroke and minor heart attack last
month.
King said her mother continues to
improve and she thanked the audience

GRAPHIC=None After Singleton's murder, public
outcry forced the state to beef up
security at Virginia's rest areas.

The most noticeable change? The
state installed unarmed private
security guards.
They work non-stop at four of
Virginia's 41 rest areas, including the
one in Ironto.
The state also cut back trees, put in
more pay phones, and improved lighting.
V-Dot says these measures are working
but concedes more needs to be done.
State Police say the biggest problem
it has at Virginia's rest stops these
days are thefts and robberies, not
murders.

of Hurricane Katrina, students at
Burlington Elementary learned character
counts and small change can add up
quickly.

Monday they brought in pennies,
the next day nickels, then dimes,
quarters and one dollar bills.
Before they knew it, students had
raised almost two thousand dollars in
five days.
Yesterday, students and parents
were recognized for their efforts at an
assembly where checks were presented to
the Red Cross.

teachers.

heads shaved if the kids of Rural
Retreat Middle School raised enough
money for the victims of Hurricane
Katrina.
The students exceeded
expectations and so, these women are
now bald.
One student also decided to join
in the fun, having his head shaved for
the first time in his life.

investigating a car that missing V-C-U
student Taylor Behl was inside sometime
before she disappeared.
Officials aren't saying who it
belongs to, or where they found it, but
ARE calling it another piece in the
puzzle.

out her dorm room yesterday afternoon.
Behl's mother says once Taylor is

The 38- year- old had a romantic

fatal beating of another man in Henry
County.

Leonard Laverne Scales.

service for the disable caused nearly
one million dollars in damage.

They say yesterday's fire started
in a vehicle inside the building on
Shenandoah Avenue.
Before firefighters could put it
out, the blaze caused heavy smoke and
heat damage to much of the building.

businesses to a high-speed network.
