More than a million residents have

In Galveston...Rita's threat has turned
this island community into a

virtual ghost town. Forecasters say
this monster hurricane could

produce a monster storm
surge...possibly 50 feet high.
Galveston's

highest sea wall is only 17 feet high.

"If a big hurricane like this comes

there's no way around it."

The last holdouts are heading to higher

Super: Beth Ibarra/Galveston resident

sot: "We've had to just put our minds

to it and just keep going..."

(OKITA bridge)

Galveston is far too familiar with
hurricanes. A category 3 hit here in

1983 and exactly 105 years ago this
month, an unnamed hurricane killed

thousands, practically wiping the city
off the map.

On the heels of its slow response to
Katrina, the federal government has

called out the cavalry for Rita..and
has already declared it an

"incident of national significance".
Rescue crews, medical personnel

and truck loads of supplies are
here...ready and waiting if needed.

And with vital oil production
facilities in the path of Rita....the

impact of this storm will likely be

felt nationwide...as the Gulf

refineries shut down.

Rita is the 17th named storm of an
already memorable hurricane

season...and if this storm packs the
punch forecasters fear, 2005 may go

down in the record books for all the
wrong reasons.
