Hurricane Rita hasn't yet made
landfall- but already the storm has a
death count.

This morning, there was a fatal
explosion aboard a bus carrying elderly

hurricane evacuees near Dallas.

Authorities say the bus apparently
caught fire because of a

mechanical problem, and that oxygen
tanks on board started exploding.

The blast left 24 people dead.

of Houston is still moving at a snail's
pace, as evacuees attempt to get out of
Hurricane Rita's way.

State officials are trying to get
gas to drivers who have run out.

The storm is bearing down on the
Texas and Louisiana coastline.

Rita is set to make landfall by
early tomorrow morning.

Rita has not officially arrived yet,
but the death toll from this storm

is already mounting. A bus carrying
evacuees caught fire overnight on a

gridlocked highway near Dallas.
Officials believe oxygen used by

elderly evacuees may have fed the
flames. More than half the 43 people

on board are believed to have died.

Traffic in this region has been at a
virtual standstill for the past few

days after a mandatory evacuation order
was issued for more than a

million coastal residents. But at this
point officials say the time to

flee may have come and gone.

for the Port Arthur-Beaumont

area...home of numerous oil refineries

Experts say any significant damage to
refineries could push the price of

gas past 3 dollars and fifty cents a
gallon.

Here in Houston, the nation's 4th
largest city has virtually shutdown

after residents made their mass exodus.
They're taking no chances ahead

of this storm, closing down schools and
businesses.

lives."

Along the coast, the first bands of
rain and wind are expected later

today with Rita's full fury arriving
overnight into Saturday morning.

being shot in the head last night in
Danville.

Police responded to a call on
Robin Hood Drive when the two men were
found in the same car on Halifax Road.

They were taken to Danville
Regional Medical Center for treatment.

When officers arrived to Robin
Hood Drive, another man was found with

GRAPHIC=Iraq after a suicide bomber set off hidden

explosives inside a public bus today in
Baghdad.

Police say eight others were
injured in the blast, which happened as
the vehicle was parked at a bus
station.

The bomber used a belt of explosives
strapped to his body beneath his
clothing.

The explosion also damaged nearby
shops and stalls being used by street
vendors.

Today's deadly attack came as many
Muslims in Iraq were heading to mosques
around the city for Friday prayers.

schools in Henry County and
Martinsville, but Henry County school
officials tell News 7 there is nothing
going on. The schools are safe.

Parents actually came out to
some schools to pick up their children.
Children told teachers they wanted to
leave for fear there was something
going.

What we do know is there was
some kind of a threat at Martinsville
Middle School. Because of that, Henry
County put an extra deputy at all
middle and high schools today.

But Henry County's public
information officer says school is in
session. She says she did not know
the details about the initial threat.

Botetout County left one person dead

this morning.

The car driven by 21year old Dane
Johnson Powers veered off the road and
crashed into a culvert.

Powers was not wearing a

in the Bud Pritchett murder case.

The jury in Montgomery County
deliberated for another three hours

this morning and declared themselves
deadlocked.

Singleton at the Ironto rest stop eight
years ago.

Pritchett remains in custody. His
family tells News-7 that they will try

A rocket carrying a military
research satellite blasted off at 7- 24
pacific time from Vandenberg Air Force
Base on the coast of California.

The Minotaur rocket is carrying a
payload that will stay in orbit for a
year, gathering information about the
Earth's environment in low orbit.

The 920 -pound payload is named
"Streak" because of the streaking
