SMOKERS HAVE LONG HEARD THE WARNINGS.

CIGARETTES ARE LIKELY TO CAUSE ALL
KINDS OF HEALTH PROBLEMS.

ONE OF THE DEADLIEST IS LUNG CANCER.

THE BEST WAY TO AVOID IT IS TO
QUIT..... BUT QUITTING IS HARD.

(SOT-Jason Young/Smoker)

(SOT-Eugene Martin/Smoker)

I'm 62 and I'm fine so far.

(SOT-Liz Otto/Smoker)

WELL NOW THERE MAY BE A SMALL RAY OF

HOPE FOR PEOPLE WHO REFUSE TO KICK

THE HABIT.

A NEW STUDY IN THE JOURNAL OF THE
AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION FINDS

SMOKERS CAN REDUCE THEIR RISK OF LUNG
CANCER, SIMPLY BY REDUCING THE

NUMBER OF TIMES THEY LIGHT UP.

(STANDUP: Dr. David Marks/CBS NEWS/New
York, NY)

RESEARCHERS FOUND PEOPLE WHO CUT THEIR
NUMBER OF CIGARETTES IN HALF ALSO

CUT THEIR RISK OF LUNG CANCER BY 25
PERCENT.

FOR SMOKERS THIS WOULD APPEAR TO BE
GOOD NEWS.

(SOT-Jason Young/Smoker)

it makes sense.

(SOT-Eugene Martin/Smoker)

sooner or later I got to cut it down
(laughs)

(SOT-Liz Otto/Smoker)

I would definetely cut down - if I was
told I didn't have to quit

forever, um yeah I would do that.

BUT DONT GET TOO EXCITED.

DOCTORS SAY EVEN WHEN YOU CUT DOWN...

THE RISK OF LUNG CANCER IS STILL

DRAMATICALLY HIGHER WHEN COMPARED TO A
NON-SMOKER.

AND FEWER CIGARETTES OFFERS NO
PROTECTION AGAINST HEART DISEASE.

(SOT-Dr. Len Horovitz/Lenox Hill

Hospital)

Reducing smoking is nice, it reduces
your rate somewhat but you have to

quit smoking to really eliminate your
risk of lung cancer and heart

disease to that of the general
population.

WHILE THE NEW STUDY IS INTERESTING IT
ONLY LEADS TO THE SAME OLD

CONCLUSION.

IN THE END: THERES NO SUCH THIING AS A
SAFE CIGARETTE.

Actually, runners in the Quad
Cities Marathon got an unexpected break
when they had to stop to let a couple
freight trains pass.

When a race organizer found out a
*third* train was on the way, he parked
his truck on the tracks to clear the
way for the rest of the pack.

The truck blocked the way for
about 90-minutes.

The Iowa Interstate Railroad says
there was a breakdown in communication

In other words, they got their
signals crossed.
