Lynchburg ended without incident last
night.

Last Night Police were called to the James
Crossing apartment complex around 11
p-m.

That's where a suspect had
apparently holed up in an apartment and
was refusing to come out.

Tactical teams were put together
while negotiators tried to make contact
with the man.

Around 1:15, authorities cut
power to the building and stormed the
apartment ... and quickly made an
arrest.

He'd been barred from the complex
earlier.

Police say he was not armed ...
they found him hiding behind a water
heater in the apartment.

need of some rain.

Conditions are so dry, grass is
burning and ponds are running out of
water.

Right now, we're in the middle of
an agricultural drought.

Pulaski and Wythe County
officials even asked the governor for
help this week.

Local farmers say if it doesn't
rain soon they could have to take some
drastic measures.

Some farmers are already dipping
into their hay supplies.

Extension agents say it's several
months too early and could cost the
farmers a lot of extra money.

a house.

Firefighters responded to this

house in the 2900 block of Embasst
Drive around five yesterday evening and
found the house engulfed in flames.

No was home when the fire
started.

Investigators say the fire
started from discarded smoking
materials on the back deck, and then
spread to the attic.

Officials say the home is a total
loss.

The Red Cross is assisting the
family with supplies and clothing.

a Bassett man for one of the break-ins,
but say they are unsure whether the
arrest will solve the rest.

charged with felony vandalism for
damage at the People's Church of the
Living God.

heating up.

presented his platform for Roanoke
County supervisor.

again.

back this year after a ten- year-
hiatus.

Most of the exhibits are modeled
to fit Virginia's standards- of-
learning.

Members of the Virginia Tech
Dairy Club have set up shop in hopes of
educating visitors about their famous

students who broke into a liquor store
last spring will spend another three
months in jail.

Police say Jefcoat was driving a
Norfolk Southern bucket truck when he

to leave the dairy business.

Mark Newbill has been operating his
dairy farm for nearly eleven years.


But, he says cheap imports and rising
fuel and energy costs have just run him
dry.

Newbill's decision is part of a growing
trend.

He says in the last 20-years, Franklin
County has gone from having about
140-dairy farms to fewer than 70.

He believes another factor is the
declining number of smaller milk
processors, like Valley Rich in
Roanoke, which shut down in August.
