Dispatchers started to receive
calls for the fire around 4-45
yesterday afternoon.

Yesterday The problem? Authorities didn't
know whether the blaze near the
intersection of Dale and Seventh
Streets was in Roanoke or Vinton
because the 9-1-1 call was made from a
cell phone.

The single-family home was a
total loss.

Arriving firefighters reported
seeing heavy smoke.

They said it was tough to knock
down with all the stuff packed into the
home.


Because of the uncertain
jurisdiction, two separate fire crews
were dispatched to fight the blaze.

Initially, Roanoke dispatchers thought
it was in their jurisdiction and sent
crews to Seventh Street in the city.
But, after several more calls- Vinton
dispatchers discovered it was in the
town.

Brookneal Elementary school gymnasium
last Thursday night.

Students have missed two days of
class while educators worked overtime

Virginia Tech's 1995 Sugar Bowl
championship team will be on hand, as
well.

The 10 year reunion of the team
that whipped the University of Texas
and Ricky Williams only seems

appropriate since one of the members of
that team - Shaine Miles is returning
home as a Marshall assistant coach.

They won't be necessary for
Saturday's Noon kickoff - but the new
lights on the east side of Lane Stadium
are now operational. The lengthy
burn-in period to check for any
problems is well underway to make sure
everything is set for the first night
game of the season on Thursday night

Last Sunday Johnson originally had an excuse.
Well as my old coach said excuses are
reason's not to succeed. Today Johnson
took the blame for causing an 8 car
accident just 20 laps into the race.
Johnson has apologized to Sadler and
has left a message to do the same with
Michael Waltrip who rolled several
times in the accident. The man who
suffered the worse as far as points was
Mark Martin who like Johnson is part of
the chase for the Championship. Martin
fell to 9th in the Chase standings.

Champion Boston Red Sox began defense
of their crown by taking on the Chicago
White Sox in Game number 1 of their
series.

This is not the start that Boston
wanted to get off too. The White Sox
scored 5 runs in the bottom of the
first off of Matt Clement. It was all
highlighted by A.J. Pierzynski's 3 run
bomb. Chicago leads this one 8 to 2
in the 7th inning.

Louis sprint out to an early 8 to
nothing lead over San Diego thanks to
their offense. Both Jim Edmonds and
Reggie Sanders hit home runs. Edmonds
was a triple short of the cycle. The
Cards starting pitching was pretty good
as well, Cris Carpenter pitched 6
scoreless *CG final San Diego innings before leaving the game with
5 Dehydration. Saint Louis wins game 1 8 St. Louis to 5 over San Diego.

Saturday Night That's the word from Center in the
Square officials-

Nearly 900 tickets were sold... and
about 15 hundred people including
volunteers made it to the Roaring 20's
party.

As people danced in downtown
Roanoke- money was raised-

After costs, Affair in the Square
made a 50-thousand dollar profit- That
will go toward the 2 million dollars a
year it costs to operate Center.

WDBJ helped sponsor the event this
year- as part of the station's 50th
anniversary year celebration.

This is the 23rd annual Affair in the
Square.
