could be decided on by the end of the
year.
And supporter Brian Wishneff made
his case that a stadium renovation is a
legitimate economic development project
with similarities to the Hotel Roanoke.

Roanoke enjoyed widespread support, but
planners still had to make the numbers
work. Their answer, wishneff says, was
a unique conference center much bigger
than the hotel itself could justify.
He says the city should take a
similar approach with its football
stadium.

complimented Wishneff on his research,
but wasn't ready to embrace his
argument.
The city will soon have cost
estimates comparing renovation with new
construction, the information council
members say they need to make a
decision.

work, a man suspected of breaking into
dozens of businesses in central
Virginia is behind bars.

VO-NAT 45-year-old Donald Ray Todd, Junior was
arrested last week after police caught
him in the act of breaking into a
lighting store on Timberlake Road.

Todd had been under surveillance
after a Campbell County deputy stopped
him for suspicious activity a week
earlier.
Police believe Todd was breaking
into the businesses to feed a drug
habit.
He's charged with 16 burglaries and
is a suspect in at least a dozen others
in three jurisdictions.

County hope increased traffic will be
enough for a major road project to go
through.

For years- there has been talk of
an expansion which would take route 220
from two to four lanes in the Gala
area.
But, it won't come cheap- the
seven-mile project could cost upwards
of 28-million dollars.
Residents say narrow roads with
no shoulders or emergency pull-offs are
dangerous.
The project could make it on
VDOT's six-year plan.
If that's the case- a two-mile
stretch of the project could begin as
early as 2007.

The Kaine camp says Kilgore is
ignoring the facts in order to mislead
voters.
A spokesman says Kaine does NOT
support increasing the gas tax and
didn't even support the 2004 budget
package until a hike in the tax was
dropped.
Part of the Democrat's plan for
improving Virginia roads includes a
constitutional amendment to lock up the
Transportation Trust Fund.
Until voters are assured the fund
won't be raided, Kaine says he won't
even consider new revenue streams.

residents whose water has been
contaminated by the old Bedford City
landfill.

Work crews yesterday began
construction on a half-mile long
pipeline to provide city water to
people along Bell Town and Draper
Roads.
Local wells have had problems with
contaminants leaching into the water
from the city's old landfill, which
closed more than ten years ago.
Construction should be finished by
December.
The 18-hundred dollar fee to
connect to the water line will be
waived for the affected residents.

to fire.

The blaze broke out around
4:45 yesterday afternoon at a home on
Seventh Street.
Firefighters aren't sure how
it started, but the home is a total
loss.
Officials say they had
difficulty getting inside to fight the
flames.
The two residents were not
home at the time. The Red Cross is
helping them find a place to stay.
