LIKE ALL DISEASES THE MOST SUCCESSFUL

PROBLEM IS: THERES NO SCREENING TEST.

DOCTORS CAN ONLY DIAGNOSE THE ILLNESS

NOW RESEARCHERS AT NEW YORK UNIVERSITY

BRAIN WAVES..... AND THE MACHINE THAT
MEASURES THEM - THE E-E-G.

(SOT-Dr. Leslie Prichep/NYU Medical

eeg is the recording of the electrical

activity of the brain.

IN FACT THE E-E-G WORKS SIMILAR TO AN
E-K-G - WHICH MEASURES ELECTRICAL

ACTIVITY IN THE HEART.

CURRENTLY, ANETHISIOLOGISTS USE THE
BRAIN WAVE DEVICE TO MAKE SURE A

PATIENT IS STILL UNCONSCIOUS DURING
SURGERY.

BUT DOCTOR LESLIE PRICHEP SAYS THE

EARLY STAGES OF ALZHEIMERS.

(SOT-Dr. Leslie Prichep/NYU Medical

we know enough about what that
electrical signal should look like that

we know when it's normal and when it's
abnormal

(STANDUP: Dr. David Marks/CBS NEWS/New

IN A NEW STUDY DOCTOR PRICHEP AND HER
TEAM LOOKED AT THE BRAIN WAVES OF

MORE THAN 3-THOUSAND SENIORS.

THE PATIENTS WERE THEN FOLLOWED FOR
SEVERAL YEARS.

FROM THAT FIRST READING RESEARCHERS
WERE ABLE TO TELL WITH 95 PERCENT

ACCURACY WHO WOULD DEVELOP ALZHEIMERS
AND WHO WOULD NOT.

(nats)

WITH AN EARLY DIAGNOSIS DOCTORS COULD
USE CURRENT MEDICATIONS TO TRY AND

PREVENT THE DISEASE FROM TAKING HOLD.

DOCTOR PRICHEP HOPES THAT ONE DAY THE
E-E-G WILL BE PART OF A YEARLY

EXAM FOR EVERY SENIOR.

(SOT-Dr. Leslie Prichep/NYU Medical

just as your looking at the heart and
the bloods and everything else

why not also see is the brain
functioning normally.

WHILE THE RESEARCH IS ENCOURAGING THE
TEST IS NOT YET READY FOR PUBLIC

USE.

FOLLOW UP STUDIES ARE STILL NEEDED.

BUT IF THE RESULTS ARE CONFIRMED
DOCTORS COULD SOON BE READING MINDS IN

HOPES OF PROTECTING THEM.

Published reports say Cruise's
spokesperson and sister is confirming
the baby news, but didn't say when the
baby is due.

The upcoming bundle of joy marks
the latest chapter in the high-
profile, and sometimes high- octane
romance.

Cruise proposed to Holmes at the top
of the Eiffel Tower in June, but the
pair has yet to set a wedding date.

It'll be the first child for 26-
year- old Holmes.

43- year- old Cruise has two adopted
children with ex -wife Nicole Kidman.
