GRAPHIC=BYRD/CAVE SPRING We begin this morning at the much
talked about Bogle Field in Southwest
Roanoke County. This is field that was
re-done and then done-in by a
combination of a lack of rain and a
lack of common sense.
Last night, the unbeaten Cave
Spring Knights stepped on their home

Byrd.

William Byrd vs. Cave Spring Veteran official Don Caldwell
:00 watched over the coin toss to get this
one started.
And Cave Spring would start
things up with special teams as Quincy
Ruckert pulls in the Byrd punt, trudges
his way down the middle of the field,
and as he zigged, he gets zagged and
coughs up the ball. The Terriers'
Jacob Plumb gets the recovery for Byrd.
But two plays later the soggy
ball squirts through the hands of the
Terrier quarterback Landon Johnson.
Cave Spring will recover and get the
ball back.
The Knights from their 46 will
watch Danny Aiken drop back and fire
one to his left side. He will find
tight end David Redick, who makes the
grab and picks up 20 yards on the play.
Several plays later, Cave in
control inside the 25, Aiken hands off
to Kenny Horan - who sweeps to his left
side, gets a nice block, and makes a
sweet cut to find his way to the
endzone to make it 7-to-nothing at
halftime.
At the intermission on this
homecoming night, Zack Case was named
prince and Emily Ewold this year's
princess.
The King was crowned as well and
that honor went to Hal Walker, while
Stacy Craighead was named the queen.
The star volleyball player is also
headed to Seton Hall next year.
*CG 855 FINAL
The special halftime was
punctuated by more special teams play
in the third as Quincy Ruckert
blocks the punt and recovers it as well
in the endzone for the second score of

28-to-nothing.

Hidden Valley vs. Alleghany In spite of the rain - the

was a tight contest in the opening
half.
On Hidden Valley's opening drive
- the Titans are faced with a fourth
and goal from the Mounties 10 and
quarterback Tyler Coyer will call his
own number on the quarterback draw.
But Alleghany stops him short of the
first down and takes over.
Unable to move the ball,
Alleghany had no choice but to punt.
But here comes the pressure up the
middle from from the Titans as Robbie
Scoggins and Cory Sloane block it into
the endzone. Scoggins almost picks it
up for the TD, but the muddy ball rolls
out of the endzone for a safety. It's
2-to-nothing Titans.
Both teams struggled to get much
offense going in the slop, but Hidden
Valley would inch its way into field
goal position. Kyle Curbow will hit
the kick and it's 5-to-nothing.
Hidden Valley would try to add to
the lead in the first half as Coyer
fires this pass to his tight end Brian
Bush who makes the catch and a nice
gain on the play.
The Hidden Valley defense would
then step up again as Chris Leonard
moves in front of the pass and picks it
off to put the ball back in the hands
of the Titans.
But the Titans would have trouble
hanging on as well.

Amherst is looking to get

heads for the sideline. He will find
it and ride it 50 yards to the zone.
The touchdown run makes it a 7-to-6
game in favor of Heritage.
Amherst would then go for two -
and get it. Tinsley hits Vincent Moore
on the pass play and after trailing the
entire game Amherst is suddenly on top
8-to-7.
Heritage's A.J. Payne would get
bust and try to get the Pioneers make
in position as he and Jeff Markey work
for a first down, but the drive would
fail.
*CG 857 FINAL
Amherst gets it back and Tinsley
will try to find Derrick McCoy in the

GRAPHIC=FFE Welcome back folks.
When the rains started last night
- someone asked me if Friday Football
Extra would be cancelled this week?
My reply was simple --- NOPE!
In the 22 years of the program
not once has it been cancelled.
It's been close twice - last year
when Hurricane Ivan rolled through -
many folks got ahead of the storm and
played on Thursday. We covered the
games that night and then put the show
on Friday evening.
Plus, on September 23rd of 1989 -
only one game was played that night
when Hurricane Hugo wiped out
everything except Brookville and
Altavista.
We also put on a show with just
one game back on September 6th of 1996
as Hurricane Fran hit the Carolina
coast the night before. Almost every
school in Virginia called off games
early in the morning. But down in
Washington County, Holston and Rural

thankful they did.

John Battle would finally answer
the call when Ike Roberts took this
Cody Calloway handoff and fought his

The Indians would then turn it on
as Matt Heldreth - the quarterback -
hits Jonathan Hawkins on a short slant
route into the zone. It's now 26-to-7
after the 9 yard score.
Hawkins wasn't finished. He will

against William Fleming.
Then late in the game, the 5-11,
165 pounder turned the trick again,
this time on a 38 yard TD gallop
propelling Salem to a 14-6 win over the
Colonels.
Gaines gained 98 yards on the
ground but lost in the shuffle, was his
perfect night thru the air which
included completing all 7 of his pass
attempts for 160 yards.

STEVE MAGENBAUER/SALEM HEAD COACH:
Gaines was a defensive back on last
season's Salem squad that won a state
title. He watched Matt Shawver, now a
JMU walk-on, throw for more than 2300
yards and 25 TD's. Needless to say,
expectations were thru the roof
entering this season in the Salem
Nation, where the Spartans have now won
18 of their past 19 games.

STEVE:
Gaines hopes that competitive spirit
will help him lead the Spartans to a
6th state title in December. Travis
