Commuters at Penn Station were greeted
by police in hazmat suits this

morning, after a mysterious substance
was found in the main terminal.

These things happen from time to time
in New York and usually turn out

to be nothing, but this one took on
special significance since

yesterday's terror threat against the
New York City transit system .

Still, it.didn't stop Mayor Michael
Bloomberg from taking his daily

subway commute.

sot: Bloomberg

New York City police are on heightened
alert after the FBI warned the

mass transit system had come under its
most specific terrorist threat

ever. And while no one questions the
threat....some wonder just how

credible it is. Federal officials say
the information isn't fully

corroborated, but in this post 911
world...officials in the Big Apple

aren't about to take any chances.

sot: Bloomberg or Kelly

(graphic)

Sources tells CBS News, the threat was
intercepted through internet

chatter involving 19 or more people
from outside the U-S. They talked

about suicide bombings, using
backpacks, brief cases and baby
carriages.

The exact timing of the attacks was not
clear.

(Harmelin bridge)

The threat is getting the attention of
commuters. Ridership is lighter

than usual with many either staying
home or finding other means to get

around...at least for today.

(Others remain unshaken.)

sot: commuter

sot: commuter

More than 4 million people ride New
York's massive subway system on an

average week day. The mayor is
encouraging commuters to decide for

themselves whether the system is
safe...while reminding riders his city

will spare no resource and spare no
expense to protect them.

Track: Up until now our best weapon
against cervical cancer has been the
annual pap test...but now a new vaccine
is showing signs it could offer ground

(nats of woman getting shot)

Track: The vaccine known as
gardasil...was given to 12-thousand
woman in 13 countries. It managed to
prevent the cervical cancer causing
virus HPV 100 percent of the time.

(SOT) Dr. Eliav Barr/Merck Vaccine

Program

I think this is a really major advnace
for women worldwide. This is the second
leading cause of cancer in women and
there's been nothing available to
prevent the infection that causes this
cancer.

Track: The majority of cervical cancers

are caused by some form of the HPV
virus...it's the most common sexually
transmitted virus...yet one few young
people like Erin Schwartz have ever
even heard of.

((SOT/ Erin Schwartz/trial

participant))

I barely had a clue what HPV was.

Track: Erin has participated in the
vaccine trial for 3 years...researchers
say the idea behind the vaccine will be
to educate and protect young women when
they become sexually active

((SOT/ Dr. Jacob Lalezari/Mt Zion

Hospital UCSF))

133939 the key is to provide the
protection to young people during their
most active sexual period..which is
roughly from 15 to 30.

Track: The vaccine is controversial
though.

Several groups who advocate sexual
abstinence believe it will promote
promiscuity....but Erin Schwarts says
parents need to wake up to the

realities and protect their kids from
cancer.

(SOT)

I believe that women are sexually
active younger than most parents want
to believe is the truth but it's the
truth. If you can protect them before
they get infected with HPV I don't see
why not.

the vaccine trial...hopes to have
Gardasil FDA approved and on the market
by 2006.
