flu has been killing millions of fowl
in Asia, and began showing up in Turkey
earlier this week.

are showing up in Romania.
The European Union has banned
shipment of ALL poultry products from
Romania and Turkey.
At least one town in Romania is
under quarantine-- including people.
The World Health Organization has
warned that the virus could mutate into
a form that spreads easily from person
to person, possibly triggering a global
pandemic.

birds that have transmitted the virus
to humans. And many of them have died
from it.

In an average flu season there are
about 36-thousand deaths in the US. But
in past pandemics the U-S death toll
has been much higher. The Spanish flu
of 1918 killed 500-thousand, the Asian
flu in 1957 claimed 70-thousand, and
the most recent 1968-69 Hong Kong flu
left 34-thousand dead.
That's why researchers are working on
a vaccine to protect people -- but
even that's been a challenge.

Dillon Stadium.
