So far, it's been chicken and other

to humans. And many of them have died
from it.

FOR THE AVIAN FLU THE DEATH RATE IS
RIGHT OVER 50-PERCENT OF THE CASES WE
KNOW ABOUT RIGHT NOW. THE FLU THAT
CIRCULATES AROUND IN OUR PART OF THE
WORLD DOESN'T HAVE A DEATH RATE TO COME
CLOSE TO THAT

(END SOT)

In an average flu season there are
about 36-thousand deaths in the US. But
in past pandemics the U-S death toll
has been much higher. The Spanish flu
of 1918 killed 500-thousand, the Asian
flu in 1957 claimed 70-thousand, and
the most recent 1968-69 Hong Kong flu
left 34-thousand dead.

That's why researchers are working on
a vaccine to protect people -- but
even that's been a challenge.
