For Iraqis looking to celebrate their
nation's new constitution...that

victory dance may have to wait.
Election officials are auditing results

after finding what they
call.."unusually high" numbers of
"yes" votes

in about a dozen provinces.

The election commission has made no
mention of fraud and constitution

supporters argue the irregularities are
mostly in Shiite dominated

provinces expected to vote "yes".

But opposition Sunni leaders say police
took ballot boxes from heavily

"no" districts and they claim some
"yes" areas had more ballots than

registered voters.

(natz Ramadi)

In Ramadi...where voting was said to be
very light... Sunnis are

accusing the U-S military of bombing
innocent civilians. U-S officials

say it attacked "terrorists" who were
setting a roadside bomb. Five

American soldiers were killed by a
roadside bomb in the area over the

weekend.

All this is deflecting the spotlight
away from Iraq's constitution and

another milestone event for the nation.

Saddam Hussein and seven senior members
of his former regime go on trial

beginning tomorrow. They face murder
charges...accused of ordering the

deaths of about 150 Iraqis following an
attempt on Hussein's life in

19-82

If convicted, Hussein could get the
death penalty, although that may not

happen for some time. After opening
arguments on Wednesday, the trial

is expected to adjourn for several
weeks.

(Roberts close)

Here in Washington, President Bush is
obviously watching events in Iraq

very closely. The President is pleased
with progress being made, but

he's withholding final comments on
Iraq's constitution until the

election commission finishes its audit.

Warner yesterday announced that
nearly 95 percent of Virginia high
school seniors graduated this year.

The class of 2005 was the second
class of seniors required to pass SOL
tests to earn their diploma.

The project is an aggressive
initiative to help struggling students
meet diploma standards with the help of
remedial academies and online
tutorials.
