GRAPHIC=Saddam Saddam Hussein's day in court has

finally arrived.

Iraqi justice made the former
dictator a defendant in the first trial
for ONE of many crimes against
humanity.

On the same day-- there's more
violence in Iraq.

An American soldier was among five
people killed there today.

The man they called the Butcher of
Baghdad.. is now facing the Mother

of all Trials...and fighting for his
life.

Saddam Hussein and seven top aides

stand accused of ordering the

massacre of nearly 150 Shiites
following an attempt on his life in

19-82.

After the incident, Saddam was seen
telling village residents only the

guilty would be punished, but
eventually scores were killed... and
parts

of the town destroyed.

(D'AGATA BRIDGE)

IRAQI AND WESTERN HUMAN RIGHTS GROUPS
ESTIMATE THAT SADDAM IS

RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATHS OF AT LEAST
300,000 IRAQIS. BUT PROSECUTORS

SAY THIS IS THE EASIEST AND FASTEST
CRIME TO NAIL HIM ON...AND THEY'VE

GOT THE PAPER TRIAL TO PROVE IT.

Defense attorneys see it much
differently.

They argue this court has no
jurisdiction and say a fair trial is

impossible with the U-S dictating the
rules.

"INTERNATIONAL LAW HAS BEEN BREACHED
BECAUSE AN OCCUPYING POWER IS NOT

ENTITLED TO CHANGE THE LAW OF THE
OCCUPIED LAND AND CREATE A NEW SPECIAL

COURT."

(natz)

After the U-S toppled his regime,
Saddam went on the run and was caught

hiding in the ground nearly 2 years
ago.

Since then, Iraq's new leaders have
been gathering evidence against the

former dictator.

Saddam ruled this nation with an iron
fist for 23 years...now millions

here hope the former dictator will
finally pay a heavy price for his

alleged crimes.....his own life.
