Watts. a hurricane is wishful thinking. They
(END SOT) abandoned such a quest after more than
two decades of government-sponsored
research.
It was called "Project Stormfury." In
the 1960's, researchers started
dropping silver iodide into clouds just
outside of the hurricane's eyewall. The
idea was that this would develop a new,
bigger eyewall that would collapse the
old one. The reformed hurricane would
spin more slowly and be less dangerous.
Sometimes, the experiments
appeared to work. Hurricane Debbie in
1969 was seeded twice over four days by
several aircraft.
Researchers noted that its
intensity decreased by up to 30
percent. But it wasn't good enough to
keep funding the project. Stormfury was
abandoned in the 1980s after spending
hundreds of millions of dollars.
Suggestions over the years have
include everything from artificially
cooling the water, to dropping bombing
these monsters. According to the
National Hurricane Center, a Hurricane
releases heat energy at 50-to-200
trillion watts. That's like dropping a
10 megaton nuclear bomb every 20
minutes.

Jackson received a jury summons
at his Neverland Valley Ranch,
four months after being acquitted of
child molestation charges.
It's unlikely that Jackson will
show up for jury selection.
His lawyers have filed paperwork
for a deferment based on the fact that
he now lives permenantly in Bahrain.
Jury Commissioner Gary Blair says
Jackson likely will be excused
from serving.
