OQ=CBS News, New York. <
(END SOT) SOUNDBITE: "Mrs. Rosa Parks was
arrested because she refused to give up
her seat."
TRACK: Her simple act of defiance
ignited the modern civil rights
movement.
On December 1, 1955, a long work day
behind her, tired, fourty-two year old
seamstress Rosa Parks was riding home
on a Montgomery Alabama bus when she
and three other black pasengers were
ordered to give up their seats so that
one white man could sit down.
Rosa Parks refused.
SOT PARKS: "I could not by any means
comply with the order of the bus
driver."
The police were summoned, yet the
quiet, unassuming woman would not
budge. "I don't think I should have
to, " she said. Parks' arrest was the
catalyst for a mass boycott of the
city's buses.
The boycott brought Martin Luther King
Junior to national prominence as he and
other ministers provided spiritual and
organizational leadership. For 381
days, the black citizens of Montgomery
walked,biked, car-pooled and hitchiked
rather than patronize the segregated
bus line. Only when a supreme court
order declaring Montgomery's segregated
seating laws unconstitutional was
served on city officials did blacks
return to the now integrated buses.
SOT PARKS: "I felt that as a person, if
I did not want to be mistreated, there
was no way I was goign to stop being
mistreated if Iaccepted it
continuously."
Over the decades, as she spoke at
conventions, churches and celebrations,
she t ried to ake her fellow Americans
aware of the history of civil rights in
the United States...her mere presence
testimony to the fact that one person
can make a difference.
