She's been called the mother of the
civil rights movement, but to hear Rosa
Parks tell it, she was just fed up.

(SOT ROSA PARKS) "THERE WAS NO WAY I

WAS GOING TO STOP BEING MISTREATED IF I
ACCEPTED IT CONTINUOUSLY."

The seamstress was riding home from a
long day's work in Montgomery Alabama,

on December 1st, 1955. She and three
other black passengers were told to
stand so a white man could sit. Parks
refused, and was arrested. At 42 years
old, she wasn't tired from work, she
would later explain, SHE was tired of
giving in.

(SOT MARTIN LUTHER KING) "MRS ROSA

PARKS WAS ARRESTED BECAUSE SHE REFUSED
TO GIVE UP HER SEAT."

It was a simple act, but a courageous
one, at a time when disobeying a bus
driver could get a black citizen
arrested, even killed. Her arrest led
to a massive boycott of city buses. For
381 days, the black citizens of
Montgomery biked, hitchhiked, or
walked, some more than 20 miles. With
one small act of defiance, Parks
ignited the civil rights movement...
inspiring generations, and changing a
nation.

(DETROIT MAYOR)

"FOR ONE, I WOULD NOT BE STANDING HERE
WERE IT NOT FOR HER SITTING DOWN AND
STANDING UP AT THE SAME TIME."

(later video)

Parks was given the Congressional Gold
Medal of Honor in 1999.. The highest
award the government can give...

More than 40 colleges and universities
gave her honorary doctorates...

But she remained humble to the end.

Asked how she would like to be
remembered... Parks said...

I'D LIKE PEOPLE TO SAY I WAS A PERSON
WHO ALWAYS WANTED TO BE FREE AND NOT
JUST FOR MYSELF, FREEDOM IS FOR ALL
HUMAN BEINGS."
