Marvin Thompson says there are signs
Roanoke schools are making progress.
However, he is disappointed that
only half of the city's schools met
state accreditation standards.

including Fallon Park Elementary, which
achieved full accreditation after being
warned in four areas a year ago.
And Thompson says other schools
that did not meet the state standards
are improving their test scores, and

left yesterday for hurricane-ravaged
Florida.

emergency operations center in Moore
Haven.
Though the power is out and the
area has been devastated by high wind
and flood waters, the men hope they're
prepared for anything and everything.
They're scheduled to remain in
the South-Central Florida area for

prototype for a new sex- offender
registry yesterday.
It's a user- friendly design that
includes a new mapping feature.
Enter your address and a
thumbnail outline appears where
registered sex offenders live and work
around you.
Identifying marks like scars and
tattoos are included in new detailed
descriptions.
You can also learn whether an
offender's victim was a child or adult.
The changes come after missing
photographs and out- dated information
were discovered in the existing
registry.
Getting the new registry on line
will cost the state more than two-
million- dollars.

Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County had
its first snowfall of the season.

Cold temperatures mixed with some
precipitation Monday night to dump
about four inches of snow in the
mountains there.
Staffers say it's been at least
twenty years since it snowed at the
resort in October.
Snow covered most of the ski
slopes ... Wintergreen plans to start
making its own snow in mid-November.
If the weather stays cold, the
slopes should be open November 26th.

Radford Monday night fits the
description of an escaped inmate.
Radford police say a man
displayed a gun and demanded money from
the American Fresh Market on East Main
Street around 7:30.
The suspect is a 165-pound
white male, about 6- -one, with red
hair-- similar to the description of
an inmate who escaped from Pulaski
County authorities Monday morning.
The escapee is 30 year old
Timothy Allen Sarver.

trying to slow down boaters.

formed in September after Lawrence and
Judy Lewis of Moneta were killed while
boating on the lake.

a speed limit of 55 during the day and
25 miles per hour at night.
They also want more deputies in
surrounding counties and more officers
and funding for the Department of Game
and Inland Fisheries.

could determine the Roanoke Dazzle's
future.

Team officials say better attendance
will help keep the team in Roanoke.
The team plans a new marketing
