Victory Stadium due next week, members
of the Roanoke City School Board are
sending information to coucil that
favors smaller stadiums at each of the
high schools.

The board estimates the cost of
building both at less than ten million
dollars.

But they say, if the cost of
renovating Victory Stadium or building
a new shared stadium is too high, they

residents recover from Hurricane
Katrina.

GRAPHIC=Lawsuit She was killed in a Roanoke


County car accident this past June.

Now her family is suing the
Roanoke County police chief and an
officer.

June Joyce Hawthorne was killed when
officer Timothy VanMarter crashed into
her S-U-V on Chapparal Drive in June.

Witnesses said the officer was
driving at a high rate of speed and did
not use his emergency lights.

But, a special prosecutor said
the officer followed proper procedure.

The family is suing Chief
Lavinder and Officer VanMarter for
negligence, breach of duty and
violating traffic laws.

The family is also seeking
ten-million dollars in damages.

they went on vacation to Cancun and
came back weighing a lot less.

Hurricane Wilma.

Art and Donita Price had been
told their flight home was on time LAST
Thursday.

Instead they spent the next six
days stuck in an elementary school
classroom converted into a shelter.

During the storm, another shelter
across the stree had to be evacuated.

Lynchburg resident Melissa Waugh
and her father have come up with the
design for "C-P-R Teddy".

What looks like an ordinary teddy
bear has a device inside that walks the
user through the proper steps for
giving C-P-R to a baby or child.

Waugh's marketing the bear to
parents, babysitters and other child
care providers.

She says it should be an addition
to ... but should not replace ...
formal C-P-R training.

owners Ross Myers and John Lawson
pledged the money to start a new School
of Construction.

The gift is one of the largest in
Tech history.

Lawson and Myers joined Sigma Phi
Epsilon in the 70's and dreamed up a

engineering at the University.

Violence cases, a local family wants to
see stiffer penalties.

VO-NAT Last week, 28-year-old Doug


Ashworth was convicted in the May
beating of his girlfriend in Salem.

Ashworth was convicted of a
misdemeanor and received home detention
and work release.

That was the decision made by the
Roanoke Co. Sheriff's office.

For three-years it has had its
home detention program.

This last year- the county has
had a passive system where a prisoner
wears an electronic monitoring device-
goes to school or work and at the end
of his day- plug the system in, where
it reports his activities to deputies.

But Kim Najjum worries this
system leaves her daughter open to

another attack.

filed a lawsuit against the apartment
complex where his daughter was
murdered.

Carmon Bennett filed a suit
against the Bridgeport Apartments in
Raleigh, North Carolina.

Bennett and his attorney claim
the conditions at the apartment were
unsafe.

They say the exterior lighting
was poor, and one of Stephanie's
windows didn't lock.

Police say a man entered through
her apartment at night, raped her and
killed her.

Drew Planten of Raleigh was
arrested last week and charged with
first degree murder.

that ended in a wreck started over
cocaine.

Wednesday Harry Keeling, Junior, was
arrested Wednesday's afternoon after
failing to stop for police and leading
them on a high speed pursuit.

Police say Keeling was a subject
of an on-going drug investigation.

He's been charged with possession
of cocaine with intent to distribute.

The 39- year old was also charged
with eluding police and obstruction of
justice.

of dollars, now this former Bojangle's
manager is racking up more jail time in
another city.

Melinda Bond was in a Virginia
Beach court this week for violating
probation on an embezzlement conviction
from April 2003.

In June, Bond was convicted in a
Salem courtroom for the same offense.

She was given eight-months to
serve in this area, but in late
September was transferred to the
Virginia Beach jail.

A spokeswoman there says Bond
received just under two-years to serve
for that violation.
