GRAPHIC=FFE Good evening everybody and

welcome to Friday Football Extra on
this the 10th week of the regular
season.

Most schools have had their bye
weeks now, and some already have said
good-bye to any hopes of the playoffs
or even a winning season.

However, many teams in the area
were not only playing to enhance their
postseason chances tonight, but also to
stay undefeated.

Folks - you need to settle in and
pay attention tonight - because the
Halloween spirits were restless this
evening. All kinds of crazy results
are coming your way in the next 30
minutes.

GRAPHIC=CAVE/SALEM And we begin the battle of

unbeatens.

The Salem Spartans played host to
their long-time rivals from Cave Spring
tonight at Salem Stadium in a contest
featuring two 7-and-0 teams from the
River Ridge district who have occupied
prominent positions in our Super 7
rankings for weeks.

OQ=... << The defending Division Four
(END SOT) champs rolled onto their home turf

hoping to take out its second south
county high school in as many weeks.

But first year Knights' boss Tim
Fulton had other plans as his team
looked to take down the Spartans.

The offenses on both sides came
in with lofty stats, but defense
dominated in this one on both sides as
the only things tougher to come by than
yards - were points.

Salem had the only significant
drive of the first half - with 10:20
left in the second quarter, Keith
Gaines drops back and fires a pass
downfield to Tony Spradlin - who is

interfered with. The penalty will give
the Spartans excellent field position
in Cave Spring territory.

Five plays later facing a fourth
and six - Gaines will connect with
Spradlin on a huge play to keep the
drive alive.

Salem would eventually get the
ball down in the red zone and D'juan
Smith will bowl up the middle and bang
his way in the endzone - capping a 14
play - 74 yard drive to put Salem on
top 7-to-nothing at halftime.

Defense continued to dominate
until late in the fourth. Cave
Spring's Danny Aiken wakes up the
Knights on this second and six from his
own 30 as he picks up 12 yards moving
the ball to the 42 yard line.

Then with 1:12 left on the clock
- faced with a third and 1 from Salem's
32 - Aiken out of the shotgun will pass
to Sam Cole for six down to Salem's 26
and a first down.

Four plays later with just 11
seconds left on the clock - Aiken fires
to his right - the ball is tipped by
Michael Turk - David Redick snatches it
- turns and dives in the endzone for 6

points.

The Cave Spring seniors then
urged their coach to go for the win and
instead of forcing overtime.

Aiken will roll to his right, He
can't find any open receivers, so he
makes a beeline for the pylon. But the
refs rule he came up inches short of
breaking the plane and Salem hangs on
for the 7-to-6 win.

On the ensuing kickoff - Hidden

Several plays later from the 18 -
Coyer will find T.C. Bane, who button
hooks at the goal line, makes the catch
and then steps in for the touchdown.
It's 21-to-14 still in the third.

Blacksburg would try to regroup
and keep it together as Trey Gresh
fires the rock down the near side, but

Titans again.

Early in the fourth - Coyer finds
Cory Sloane at the goal for another
score and suddenly it a 21-to-21 game

Blacksburg could have folded all
the way at that point but give the

Bruins credit - Gresh fires the ball

The Blue Tornadoes came into last

OQ=we will be back << The Cavaliers only loss this was
(END SOT) to Bassett, but few folks gave them a

chance against the Blue Tornadoes even
though the game was on their home turf.

And in the first quarter it
looked like the rout was on - one its
first possession quarterback Justin
McCracken gets cracking as he pushes
the pile forward and scores one a one
yard quarterback sneak. It's

7-to-nothing Richlands.

Now in the second, McCracken will
wind up and throw a strike to Anthony
Miller, who does the rest on his own
picking up 35 yards and giving
Richlands a first down on Carroll
County's 15.

But the Blue Tornadoes would get
nothing as Jake Lamb picks off the
fourth down pass from McCracken.
Richlands is forced to nurse a
7-to-nothing lead at halftime.

It stayed that way until under
two minutes left in the game - Carroll
County's offense needed a play and
Casey Lawson gets one as he runs for 18
yards and first to convert a key third
down.

But after the run - Lawson had to
leave the game with an injury, and
sophomore Travis Green came in from the
frigid sideline - and all he does is
float a pass to the endzone - where
Lamb out jumps four Richlands'
defenders and somehow pulls in the
touchdown. The first TD given up by
Richlands all season.

But the Carroll County
celebration was short lived as Lance

Ayers misses the extra point, and
Richlands escapes with a 7-to-6 win and
in the process clinches the Southeast
district championship.

Franklin County to town.

Both teams came in with 5 wins on
the season, but Franklin County was
looking to stay perfect in district

Franklin Co. vs. George Washington The Homecoming king and queen :00 were crowned at halftime as Lauren
Pritchard and Marcus Dodson were
honored.

We pick this one up in the third
quarter with Franklin County on top
10-to-7. GW's T.J. Price tries to hit
Travis Tarpley, but instead the pass is
picked off by J.T. Edwards- who makes a
30 yard return and puts the ball back
in the hands of Franklin County.

D.J. Willis will then try to
build on the eagles lead as he finds
Mark Kent on the pass over the middle
and he will not only make the catch but
take it in for the score. The 46 yard
scoring play puts Franklin County on
top 17-to-7.

Now in the fourth, GW is still in
it and when Dominique Fitzagerald took
this pass - he would be able to motor
down to the two yard line and put the
home boys in scoring position.

On the next play, John Gregory
goes in for the score *CG 850 FINAL and it's now a 17-to-14 game as
GW cuts the lead to 3.

Franklin County wins it 17 to 14.

player of the week.

Last Friday night one of the top game
in the state was played in Wythe County
as unbeaten Chilhowie took on George

The Maroons not only handed the
Warriors their first loss of the
season, but they did so in dominating
fashion by posting a 27-to-nothing.

The man who was responsible for almost
all of the 27 points is Derrick Davis.
The Maroons' senior quarterback rushed
for a score, passed for a score and
returned a punt for another TD to earn

(END SOT) Davis walked the walk on the Chilhowie

Warriors in front of his home fans in
the key Hogoheegee district showdown as
he racked up over 310 yards of total
offense.

And he did it wearing a cumbersome
brace on his banged up left knee.

BITES OF DONNIE AND DERRICK

Davis has always been known for
his quickness and running ability, but
his passing was amazingly efficient
against Chilhowie.

He attempted two passes and
completed them both. One went for 56
yards and set up a score and this one
went for 51 more as Kenny Suthers
hauled it in for a second quarter
touchdown.

Talk about your efficiency - 2
for 2 for 107 yards and a touchdown.

BITE OF DAVIS

Davis and Pruitt again have the
Maroons on the right path to make the
playoffs this season and keep alive the
quarterback's hopes of winning a state
title.

As a freshman - Davis played on
the varsity - but then he wasn't a
player in a position of leadership like
he is now.

BITE OF DAVID AND DONNIE.
