OQ=The White House << PRESIDENT BUSH'S NEXT SUPREME COURT
(END SOT) NOMINEE -- IS 55-YEAR OLD

SAMUEL ALITO... A CONSERVATIVE APPEALS
COURT JUDGE, WHO IS ALREADY

COMING UNDER FIRE, FROM DEMOCRATS.

Sen. Chuck Schumer / D - NEW YORK: "A
preliminary review of his record raises
real questions about

Judge Alito's judicial philosophy and
his commitment to civil rights,
workers' rights, women's rights."
(:13)

IN STARK CONTRAST TO HARRIET
MIERS...WHO WITHDREW HER NAME,

LAST WEEK.. MR. BUSH POINTED OUT --
ALITO HAS MORE JUDICIAL EXPERIENCE

THAN ANY SUPREME COURT NOMINEE, IN THE
LAST 70-YEARS.

President Bush: "Judge Alito has
gained the respect of his

colleagues and attorneys for his
brilliance and

decency. He's won admirers across the
political spectrum."

ALITO WILL LIKELY GET A LOT OF
QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS DECISION TO SUPPORT
A PENNSYLVANIA LAW -- REQUIRING WOMEN
TO NOTIFY THEIR HUSBANDS,

BEFORE GETTING AN ABORTION.

A HIGHER COURT ENDED UP STRIKING DOWN
THAT LAW.

SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN
ARLEN SPECTER - SAYS HE WILL NOT ASK

ALITO WHERE HE STANDS ON ROE VERSUS
WADE ... BUT, HE SAYS, HE ..WILL..

ASK THE NOMINEE FOR HIS VIEWS, ON
STICKING TO LEGAL PRECEDENTS.

JUDGE ALITO SAYS - HE'S LOOKING FORWARD
TO THE CONFIRMATION PROCESS.

Judge Samuel Alito / SUPREME COURT
NOMINEE: "I will do everything I can
to cooperate with them, and discuss my
record as a judge, and the record of
what I've done during the other stages
of my legal career."

Drew Levinson / CBS News: President
Bush called for a

confirmation vote by the end of the
year, but some Senate leaders say it
may have to wait until next year. Drew

gasoline than you did a month ago.

The Energy Information
Administration says pump prices have
fallen about 50 cents a gallon over the
course of October.

Following supply interruptions
caused by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina,
prices hit a high of nearly two
dollars, 93 cents a gallon in the week
ended October third. In the latest
week, they averaged two-48 -- a drop of
more than 12 cents in the last week
alone.

The national average remains more
than 44 cents above year-ago levels.

GRAPHIC=Halloween Of course today is Halloween and

people got an early start today on
Roanoke's City Market.

ENG#=2 VO-NAT

VO-NAT Downtown Roanoke Incorporated held

its annual costume contest today for
the young and young at heart.

Some of the costumes included
"Dolly Parton," a lint roller, and both
Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked
Witch of the West.

The Pillsbury Dough-GIRLS made an
appearance. They were followed shortly
there after by a bloody chef who tried
to serve her wares to unsuspecting
customers along the Roanoke Market.

It's obvious by the costumes that a
GHOUL time was had by all.
