this week, Kilgore called Northern
Virginia the final battleground.
Pundits say that's because Tim
Kaine has focused a lot of attention on
Republican leaning suburbs there.
However, Holsworth says its
important for Kaine to stay focused on
voters in southwest and southside to be

Services employee who left a child
alone in a car- was sentenced today.

Stone left a ten-month old foster child
in the car for about five hours.
Stone was transporting the child
when a family emergency distracted her
enough to forget the child when she
switched cars. The child is o-k.
Stone plead no contest to
reckless endangerment of a child in
August.

Tuesday's murder of a Roanoke store
owner.

Forty-three year old Gary

indicate police found a pipe used to
smoke crack in the car.

We took a walk across Wasena
Bridge recently, as we remembered what
we went through November 4th, 1985.
There'd already been a lot of
rain- - an inch of rain or more some
days- -for several days. Then tropical
storm Juan opened up on us, and we were
in crisis mode.

STARTED IN SALEM. THAT WAS THE FIRST
HEADS UP THAT WE HAD THAT SOMETHING
PHENOMENAL WAS HAPPENING. MY
RECOLLECTION WAS THAT THERE A WALL OF
WATER GOING RIGHT DOWN WEST MAIN STREET
IN SALEM.

WEATHER THIS MORNING. HE'S STANDING BY
LIVE AT WEST MAIN STREET WITHOUT AN
UMBRELLA, INCIDENTALLY. KEITH, WE NEED
TO KNOW, HAS ANYBODY BEEN HURT? IS
ANYBODY IN DANGER, AS FAR AS YOU KNOW?
ACTUALLY, RICK, THIS CAME SO SUDDENLY,
POLICE CAN'T EVEN BE SURE. THEY'RE
TELLING PEOPLE NOT TO CALL IN WITH
ROUTINE CALLS. IF YOU'VE GOT WATER IN
YOUR BASEMENT, YOU MAY HAVE TO LIVE
WITH IT FOR A WHILE.

OQ= Only hours later a Salem Rescue
crew captain was swept away and had
presumably drowned trying to free
workers in the Tultex Mill Outlet
store.
We learned of the tragedy in a
live interview with Salem's police
chief.

INQ= THE WATER WASHED THEM OUT THROUGH A
HOLE INTO MASON'S CREEK. FOUR OF THE
MEMBERS WERE ABLE TO GRAB HOLD OF TREES
AND HOLD ONTO THOSE. A FIFTH MEMBER
WAS SWEPT AWAY.

OQ= That evening we learned crew
captain Joe Cunningham had survived the
ordeal.
Of course the weatherman's house
was not immune to flooding. His home
on Howbert Street had 10 to 15 feet of
water in it. Robin's wife and two year
old son had to be evacuated by boat.

INQ= I HAVE THE FEELING AS A CITY, AS A
VALLEY, A BIG COMMUNITY, IT WAS... WE
WERE ALL IN IT TOGETHER. AND PEOPLE
RALLIED IN THAT RESPECT. THEY DID.
MANY TIMES PEOPLE WOULD DRIVE BY AND
SAY, "THAT WAS WORSE THAN WHAT WE SAW
ON TELEVISION" AND PEOPLE WOULD GET OUT
OF THE THEIR CARS AND WOULD VOLUNTEER
TO DO THINGS LIKE PUMP OUT THE
BASEMENT.

2002 Homecoming Game The Hokies aren't likely to give

donned a orange and maroon Virginia
Tech winter coat.

could be one of the worst teams in
college football this season. The
