Rioters looted and burned two major
stores, set fire to a newspaper office,
and shut down the country's largest
subway system.

Yesterday, France's president
declared a state of emergency, allowing
local jurisdictions to impose curfews.

The violence ignited almost two weeks
ago in a Paris suburb, and has spread
across the country.

Rioters also looted and burned two
major stores, set fire to a newspaper
office, and shut down the country's
largest subway system.

Yesterday, France's president

declared a state of emergency, allowing
local jurisdictions to impose curfews.

The violence ignited almost two weeks
ago in a Paris suburb, and has spread

in the towel after 31 seasons.

ENG#=3 VO-NAT

VO-NAT The veteran driver announced

yesterday that he is retiring from
Nextel Cup racing at the end of this
season.

The 49 year old driver says he
still has "the desire and ability to
win races, but a little burnout is
beginning to set in."

Rudd made his NASCAR debut in
1975 and completed his first full
season two years later, winning rookie
of the year honors in 1977.

He has 23 career victories and
finished a career-best fourth in the
standings in 2001 and 2002.

He also holds NASCAR's record for

consecutive starts with 786, a streak
that began in 1981.
