of their night battling a house fire on
the city's northeast side.

They were called early this
morning to the 23 hundred block of
Hollins Avenue and needed about an hour
to control the flames.

shining brightly again.

Last night, the H & C Coffee
sign was re-lit after being dark for
more than a decade.

The Roanoke landmark was recently
restored and is now located a top of
the Shenandoah Hotel.

The entire project cost nearly a
hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

Downtown Roanoke Incoporated
needs to raise another seventeen
thousand dollars for maintenance so the
sign can be lit for years to come.

arrest a bank robbery suspect in
Bedford.

retired cop.

A man entered the First National

Exchange Bank wearing a hood just
before noon.

He had a gun and demanded money
from the tellers.

While the robbery was in
progress, retired police officer Jack
Reid entered the bank to make a
deposit.

Officers had the man surrounded
within half an hour.

Twenty-year old William Louis
Holland, Junior is in custody, charged
with armed robbery.

death threat made against Mayor Nelson
Harris.

The threat is apparently related
to his Victory Stadium vote.

Last Monday A call came into his office at
the Municipal Building last Tuesday the
morning after the vote to build
stadiums at Roanoke's two high schools.

The caller said a person
threatened the mayor's safety.

The threat was credible enough
for the police to put an officer
outside Mayor Harris home for several
days.

left without jobs when a Galax
furniture company closes one of its
factories.

closing its bedroom factory in January.

The layoffs will affect workers
in both the factory and main office.

President Lee Houston blames
competition from low cost imports from
China as the reason for the closure.

University law professor, Roger Groot
died over the weekend.

The university says Groot died of
natural causes.

A Roanoke businessman was
remembered yesterday.

The late Rick Woodson, founder of
Rick Woodson Honda, was honored by the
Virginia Senate.

Senator John Edwards presented
Woodson's family with a plaque and a
senate joint resolution honoring his
life and work.

Woodson was remembered as a
father, a businessman, Korean war
Veteran, community leader, and Virginia
Tech benefactor.

Yesterday, a legislative watch-
dog commission heard how the boom is
expected to affect the Commonwealth.

Medicaid costs are projected to
increase and localities are already
reporting a shortage in medicaid-
funded nursing home beds.

The study also projects a
shortage of nearly 23- thousand
registered nurses by the year 2020.

To off- set an increase in
health- care costs, many state
employees are working longer.

Danville police officer died in the
line of duty.

But yesterday the department laid
to rest one of their own.

Church in Danville to pay their last
respects to 24-year-old Courtney
Dickerson.

Dickerson died last Thursday
after his patrol car crashed on Halifax
Road.

goodbye after five years on the job.
