(END SOT) Last year 1-point-8 million deer were

struck and killed on the nation's
highways.

Virginia ranks seventh in the
country when it comes to deer-vehicle

collisions.

And it's not just the animals who
suffer.

More *people* die in deer-vehicle
collisions each year than all the
commercial airline, train and bus
accidents combined.

One BILLION dollars worth of such
insurance claims were filed last year.

Debbie Driscoll hit a deer just
last night near Cloverdale.

I WAS JUST ON MY WAY HOME, GOING DOWN
THE ROAD AND THIS DEER HIT ANOTHER CAR
AND THEN JUST BENT OVER AND HIT ME IN
THE WINDSHIELD.

Driscoll handled it well. She
avoided swerving, kept control of her
car and pulled over to a stop, despite
the sudden impact of the crash and the
difficulty of seeing through her broken
windshield.

Those are among the things the
Insurance Information Institute
includes in its advice to motorists who
may encounter deer on the road:

Be especially alert to the
presence of deer at dawn and dusk, when
they are most likely to be on the move.

Deer seldom run alone. So, if

you see one, look out for more nearby.

Apply the brakes evenly but
firmly without swerving out of your
lane.

You're less likely to be injured
HITTING the animal, than avoiding it,
if that means you have to run off the
road.
