LONGER.. (CHARLIE) AND IS THAT A GOOD
IDEA OR A BAD IDEA? (MARTIN) IT
ALL DEPENDS IF YOU'RE MARRIED!
(LAUGHS)"
Marital bliss or not, the idea is to
stop young people from slamming
triple shots at closing time, then
stumbling out into the streets,
drunk, and bored.
SOT - BRAD KULLY/AUSTRALIAN
"THAT'S WHAT PEOPLE DO - THE LAST ROUND
- YOU'RE DRINKING A LOT QUICKER
- A LOT MORE."
ON CAMERA BRIDGE: CHARLIE D'AGATA,
LONDON
THERE ARE SOMETHING LIKE 200-THOUSAND
DRINKING ESTABLISHMENTS IN THIS
COUNTRY AND ABOUT THREE QUARTERS HAVE
APPLIED TO HAVE THEIR HOURS
EXTENDED. NOW ONE OF THE FEW THAT HAS
ALREADY BEEN DENIED IS THIS PUB
WHICH CURIOUSLY, IS ABOUT 3 BLOCKS AWAY
FROM 10 DOWNING STREET -- TONY
BLAIR'S HOUSE.
SOT - GEORGE FORLOW/LONDONER
"IF YOU'RE DETERMINED TO GET A DRINK
YOU WILL." (CHUCKLES)
Especially now...but with the lure of
stiff drinks come stiff new laws,
drawn up by a former BOSTON police
commissioner.
SOT: PAUL EVANS, DIRECTOR, POLICE
STANDARDS UNIT
TARGETTING PEOPLE FOR UNDERAGE
DRINKING, AND THEN LATER IN THE
EVENING,
TARGETTING THOSE WHO ARE
INEBRIATED...THOSE ARE THE TACTICS THAT
WILL
REDUCE SERIOUS VIOLENCE.
Many agree...and can hardly wait until
the new hours go into effect.
SOT - ROB ELLIS/LONDONER
(CHARLIE) SO YOU'RE GONNA TAKE
ADVANTAGE OF THESE NEW LAWS? (ROB) OH
YAH, IF I CAN FIND A PUB THAT'S OPEN 24
HOURS, I'LL BE THERE TIL' 2 OR 3
IN THE MORNING - NO PROBLEM."
Belated countrywide hangovers go into
effect next week.
