At least 74 people died when suicide

In Baghdad, car bombs exploded

the first deadly blow, acting as a

battering ram...

(pause for blast video)

...to decimate the hotel's blast
barriers, its only line of defense

against massive suicide car bombs.

But most of this damage was caused by a
second, bigger blast...a tanker

truck full of explosives which
detonated thirty seconds afterward.

MAJOR STANLEY, US ARMY:

THEY TRIED TO BREACH THE WALL TO GET
INTO THE HOTEL. A LOT OF DAMAGE, A

LOT OF CASUALTIES AT THE MOMENT.

Iraqi casualties....local residents,
buried beneath the rubble of their

own homes.

The target may have been the al Hamra,
home to Western journalists, but

it suffered little more damage than
broken windows.

(FILE OF PALESTINE BLAST)

The attackers followed the same M-O as
the triple suicide bomb blasts

three weeks ago at the Palestine
Hotel...again targeting journalists,

again employing one car bomb to blast
down walls so that another, larger

one could break through and wreak
havoc.

(SHOTS OF INJURED)

And those who don't deliver their
deadly payload in cars, continue to do

it on foot.

(MAP, OR APTN FOOTAGE)

In the northeast town of Khanaqin...two
bombers strapped with suicide

vests killed dozens of Shiite
worshippers packed into mosques during
the

busiest time of Friday prayers.

Mosques, western hotels...it appears
nowhere is safe...nowhere is sacred.

Authorities say it's burning on oil

Warm, dry winds are fanning the
flames, which could make the fire
unpredictable.

While there's no immediate threat to
homes, officials worry the fire could
spread to communities in the foothills.

There's no word yet on what may have
