GRAPHIC=Grandin Theater It's hard to "picture" Roanoke
without its oldest movie theater.
But that almost happened, and its
future is still uncertain.

2001 Back in November 2001, the Grandin
Theater closed after falling on hard
times.
A group of citizens then set out to
raise more than a million dollars to
re-open the theater as a non-profit.
With financial help from the city,
some of which was used to renovate the
theater, the Grandin was back in
business nearly a year after it closed.

The Grandin Theater lost money in its
first two years, adding up to more than
thirty three thousand dollars.
This year the Grandin is expected to
break even.

theater say things could be better and

The Grandin's success is greatly tied
to its box office sales.

The more tickets sold, the more money
the Grandin makes.
2004 was a banner year thanks to

and Passion of the Christ.

The Grandin will have to sell a lot
more tickets in 2007, the year the city
money runs out.
Roanoke agreed to give the Grandin
500-thousand dollars over a five year
period.
The theater is using that money to
pay off a loan about 140-thousand
dollars of which will remain once the
city money is gone.

operations next month unless money

Employees have been released and
the board says it will run the
Rockbridge County operation for the

Investigators believe the
49-year old man died from a

North American jobs.

5-hundred dogs in cramped cages,
scrounging for food- some of them sick.
They had been taken to the sanctuary
from animal rescue organizations after
Hurricane Katrina.
About 100 of them were removed,

internet in an attempt to find their
owners.
The owners of the sanctuary pled
innocent to misdemeanor animal cruelty.

star quarterback is out for the season.
He will have surgery for a sports
hernia and is expected to miss the
final six games of the year.
McNabb's doctors say recovery
from this injury usually takes about 10
weeks. He aggravated the injury to

night.

club's members. His visit coincided

donor dropped a gold coin in a
Salvation Army kettle.
The coin is a new, one-ounce Lady
Liberty coin, valued at about 5-hundred
dollars.
The gift, which was wrapped in a
one-dollar bill, was concealed in a
plastic pouch.
It is identical to a gold coin
dropped in a kettle in the same
location last year.
