Authorities say a stray cigarette
may have sparked a brush fire that
destroyed some trees and landscaping in
front of the Wyndham Hotel on Ordway
Drive.

Flames reached as high as ten
feet, melting cable lines, before
firefighters could hose things down.

They say strong winds helped
spread the fire across the parking lot.

shot to death in Danville.

Officers say 25 year old Benjamin
Moore of Danville was shot to death at
10-19 West Stokes Street around one
yesterday morning.

His body was sent to the Roanoke
Medical Examiner's office for an
autopsy.

SCAM ALERT 7 ANIM asking residents to help them catch
some scam artists, who almost cheated
an elderly couple out of 10-thousand
dollars.


A teller at the First Virginia
Bank in Big Island called police after
the couple came in asking to cash in a
C.D. to pay for their driveway re-
paving.

The suspects had originally told
them it would cost about 400 dollars,
but later raised the price to
10-thousand.

The four men left in a newer
model, gray Chevrolet pickup truck with
a logo plate in front.

It was the second paving scam
complaint Bedford County has handled
this week.

Thanksgiving with our loved ones, those
staying at the Roanoke Salvation Army
shelter spent the holiday together.

About forty men took part in
the holiday meal at the shelter on
Salem Avenue.

Volunteers and shelter residents
helped dish out the meal of turkey,
mashed potatoes, vegetables and other
fixings.

Shelter officials say it's
important to provide a family-type
setting for these men who are going
through some tough personal times.

thankful for their many blessings,
thousands more may still be wondering
where their next meal is coming from.

For at least one day, several
Roanoke-area organizations had the
answer to that question.

for turkey and all the trimmings ...
and serving it all in just a few hours.

But at Roanoke's Rescue Mission,
this is not much different than what
they do every day ... providing hot
meals to needy residents.

Mission's dining hall.

Even though the actual cooking
began Monday, this has been a labor of
love.

Rescue Mission officials say
because of large-scale disasters around
the world and in the U-S this past
year, their donations are down about 16
percent.

Unfortunately, demand is up about
17 percent, making it hard to fill in
that gap.
