Yet small business owners who count on
sugar to SURVIVE, say they're
facing a crisis.
(SOT FOLSE 054201) "WE CAN SEE THE
STALKS OF SUGAR, THE SUGAR HOUSES
GRINDING AND PROCESSING CANE AND
TURNING IT INTO SUGAR AND YET WE'RE
HAVING A SUPPLY PROBLEM."
Chef John Folse's manufacturing plant
is surrounded by sugar cane, and
he buys sugar by the TON to make his
special sauce for restaurants
around the country. In just ONE DAY,
his costs jumped more than
60-percent.
(Folse Sot: 054806) "THIS WAS 31 CENTS
YESTERDAY, IT WAS 41 CENTS THIS

Some of the blame goes to crop damage
during Hurricanes Katrina and
Rita. This is what Rita's salt water
storm surge did to about 50
thousands acres of healthy cane...
enough to put some farmers out of
business.
(ON CAM:refinery) "BUT THE BIGGER
PROBLEM IS HERE. THE NATION'S LARGEST
SUGAR CANE REFINERY IS IN THE HEART OF
SAINT BERNARD PARISH. AND JUST
LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE HERE, IT WAS
FLOODED, 23 million pounds of raw
sugar was ruined."
(mills)
With the refinery closed, clean sugar
is stacking up, waiting to be
processed.
(grocery shelves)
The shortage has yet to hit supermarket
shelves, and industry experts
say there's no reason to sound the
alarm-YET.
(JIM SIMONE/SUGARMAN 1 39 25) "OUR
PRODUCTION IS WAY DOWN, FUEL PRICES,
HARVESTING COSTS ARE WAY UP, AND THE
PRICE OF SUGAR HAS REMAINED
RELATIVELY CONSTANT."
....(chef cooking candied yams)
But chef John Folse says while those
Thanksgiving Day candied yams may
not cost more... Christmas cookies
could be a different story....
(JOHN & KELLY 054420-) "YOU THINK THIS
WILL START SHOWING IN THE GROCERY
ISLE.
I THINK THERE IS NO DOUBT ABOUT IT IT
IS JUST LIKE OIL AND GAS IT'S
SUPPLY AND DEMAND."
(refinerty pix)
And how high those prices go... will
depend on when this victim of
Katrina fully recovers.
