THE ORGANIZATION IS CHANGING ITS C-P-R

EXPERT CALL IT A "BACK TO BASICS"
APPROACH.

AND THE BIGGEST CHANGE PUTS MORE FOCUS
ON CHEST COMPRESSIONS.

BEFORE YOU WOULD PUMP THE CHEST 15
TIMES..... THEN GIVE TWO RESCUE

BREATHS.

BUT THE NEW GUIDELINES SAY PUMP THE
CHEST TWICE AS MUCH.... 30 TIMES

BEFORE GIVING THE TWO BREATHS.

(nats)

STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT CHEST
COMPRESSIONS CREATE MORE BLOOD FLOW

THROUGH THE HEART AND BODY.

THIS BUYS TIME UNTIL A DEFIBRILLATOR
CAN BE USED TO SHOCK THE HEART BACK

INTO A RHYTHM.

(SOT-Dr. Vinay Nadkarni/Children's

Hospital of Philadelphia)

"effective high quality chest
compressions can double or triple
survival

from sudden cardiac arrest."

AND CHEST COMPRESSIONS SHOULDN'T BE
STOPPED WHEN THE DEFIBRILLATOR SHOWS

UP.

THE OLD GUIDELINES SAID A PATIENT
SHOULD GET THREE ROUNDS OF SHOCKS.

NOW EXPERTS SAY AFTER THE FIRST SHOCK
C-P-R SHOULD BE ADMINISTERED FOR

TWO MINUTES BEFORE THE NEXT SHOCK IS
GIVEN.

(SOT-Dr. Vinay Nadkarni/Children's

Hospital of Philadelphia)

"if we minimize the delay in chest
compressions after a defibrillation

shock we can further double the
survival after cardiac arrest."

IT'S ESTIMATED MORE THAN 95 PERCENT OF
HEART ATTACK VICTIMS DIE BEFORE

THEY GET TO THE HOSPITAL.

IT'S HOPED THESE NEW GUIDELINES WILL

SAVE SOME OF THOSE LIVES.
