WITH GROWING PUBLIC DISSATISFACTION
OVER HIS HANDING OF THE WAR.. AND

INCREASING PRESSURE FROM LAWMAKERS ON
CAPITOL HILL.. PRESIDENT BUSH WILL

TRY TO SELL HIS STRATEGY FOR IRAQ IN A
SPEECH LATER THIS MORNING.

HIS ADDRESS WILL NOT INCLUDE A
TIMETABLE FOR U-S TROOP WITHDRAWAL.

BUSH 12:56:46 We've heard some people
say, pull them out right now.

That's a huge mistake.

TODAY THE PRESIDENT INSTEAD PLANS TO
FOCUS ON THE PROGRESS OF IRAQI

SECURITY FORCES.. A MAJOR KEY TO
EVENTUALLY BRINGING U-S TROOPS HOME.

AT THE PENTAGON DEFENSE SECRETARY
DONALD RUMSFELD RAN THROUGH SOME OF

THOSE ACCOMPLISHMENTS.. (GFX) INCLUDING
95 IRAQI BATTALIONS NOW

CONDUCTING COMBAT OPERATIONS AND 87
SQUARE MILES OF BAGHDAD NOW UNDER

IRAQI CONTROL.

(Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defnese)

RUMSFELD 13:46:19 the people who have
been denigrating the Iraqi

security forces are flat wrong!
They've been wrong from the beginning!

They're doing a darn good job

BUT IN MOST CASES IRAQI FORCES ARE

STILL OPERATING WITH AMERICAN

BACK-UP.. AND EXPERTS SEE ANOTHER WEAK
LINK.

(Col. Mitch Mitchell/U.S. Army
(Ret.)/CBS News Consultant)

MITCHELL 9:21:02 the big problem we
have is not with training numbers of

Iraqi soldiers it is with training
their leaders.. their officer and

non-com officers who are supposed to
hold units together

PRESIDENT BUSH IS ADAMANT THAT ALL
DECISIONS ABOUT THE READINESS OF

IRAQI FORCES AND ANY REDUCTION OF US
TROOPS WILL BE BASED ON THE

RECOMMENDATIONS OF AMERICAN GENERALS ON
THE GROUND.

CLOSE: TO TRY AND MAKE THE CASE HE HAS
A WORKABLE PLAN.. THE PRESIDENT

WILL DELIVER MORE SPEECHES AND THE
WHITE HOUSE IS RELEASING A 35-PAGE

DOCUMENT CALLED OUR NATIONAL STRATEGY
FOR VICTORY IN IRAQ. SUSAN ROBERTS,
