Roanoke's tree is lighting up
more controversy.

It started with yesterday's news
that the city is calling it a *Holiday
Tree*.

ONE'S IDEA.

In just a few minutes, organizers will
light Roanoke's Holiday Tree. But the
lighting won't go on without some
debate.

Roanoke City is one of very few
localities in our region calling its
tree a *holiday tree,* instead of a
Christmas Tree.

We checked with several communities and
found that Bedford...Covington....
Martinsville-Henry County....Roanoke

County...and Salem...ALL have Christmas
trees.

But according to both the Mayor's
Office in Roanoke and Downtown Roanoke,
Incorporated, THIS tree has been called
a holiday tree for at least five years,
and maybe even longer.

Mayor Harris says in a statement ...as
I understand the issue it was DRI who
initiated the use of "holiday," given
their oversight of the tree's promotion
and inclusion in Market acitivies

far away.

display is located right in front of
the Victoria Secret store, upsetting
some parents.

The reaction prompted the mall
to place a black curtain in front of
Santa so kids wouldn't notice the racy
store windows.

And while some are still angry
others don't seem to care.

Southeast Roanoke late this afternoon.

The fire broke out just before five
in the 12-hundred block of Hamilton
Terrace.

Firefighters quickly got the fire
under control, but the duplex was
heavily damaged by smoke.

No one was home at the time of the
fire, though firefighters did have to
rescue a dog.

We're told he is doing okay.

were robbed at gunpoint in their dorm
room this week have been expelled from
school.

Lynchburg police believe the two
men had been dealing drugs on campus
and that drugs were stolen from them
Tuesday.

The students have not been
cooperating with police.

The college issued a statement
today, pointing out that the sanction
for dealing drugs at L-C is expulsion
and that neither student is any longer
enrolled at the school.

Bedford County apparently is "not" the
vehicle that struck and killed a man
near Moneta last week.

indicates police impounded a 1992 Buick

Last Night Roanoke County Police say alcohol
may have been a factor in a fatal
accident on Bent Mountain late last
night.

Authorities say a Ford Explorer
driven by Justin Emmanuel Showalter was
traveling south on Bent Mountain Road
when it crossed into the northbound

lane.

The Explorer struck a tractor
trailer head-on.

Showalter died at the hospital.

Two passengers in the explorer
were injured.
