<< In the double A, Division 3
semifinals tomorrow, 11 and 1 Liberty
travels to 12 and 0 Richlands, in a
battle of two teams that made the drop
from Division Four a season ago.

Travis Wells has more on the
Minutemen and Blue Tornado.

< streak of 21 straight regular season
wins snapped against Amherst in the
finale, Chris Watts and the Minutemen
have scored 31 and 35 points in their
two playoff outings. But those two
games were in Bedford. This week,
Liberty has to take a more than three
hour trip to Ernie Hicks Stadium in
Tazewell County.

CHRIS WATTS/LIBERTY HEAD COACH:

The Blue Tornado was supposed to be in
rebuilding mode this season after

falling to Salem in last year's state
semis, but has rolled to a perfect mark
behind an efficient offense and a
punishing defense that has allowed just
45 points in 12 games.

CHRIS:

Liberty has chalked up an average of
334 rushing yards in its two playoff
wins, and if exeperience counts for
anything, the Minutemen have plenty,
with 6 consecutive postseason
appearances, including a state title in
2002, when the members of this year's
senior class were freshmen.

CHRIS:

The Blue Tornado is the top ranked
double A team in the state. Travis
Wells, Friday Football Extra.>>

< state semifinals. The Spartans won
that game on their way to a state
championship. Coach Steve Ragsdale
hopes at least one thing is different
this time around.

STEVE RAGSDALE:

The Spartans have rained on opponents
all season out of the single wing.
Ricky Cook is completely healthy and so
are his numbers with 18 TD's and just

over a thousand yards rushing. Ryne
Hevener has been equally impressive
rushing for 993 yards and 14 scores.

STEVE:

Haysi is the smallest school in the
Division Two ranks, but the Tigers have
played big in winning their third
regional title.

STEVE:

Saturday's game will take place in the
heart of the mountains and coalfields,
at Haysi's Sandlick Elementary. Travis
Wells, Friday Football Extra.>>

OQ=back in just a moment... << Welcome back to this Friday

Football Extra State Semi-final Preview
show. We turn our attention to
Division 1 where the possiblity that 2
of our teams could meet up in the State
Finals at J-M-U on December 10th, but
they both have to overcome their
opponents in the State Semi-final. We
start with William Campbell who will
take on Surry County this Saturday at
Home in Naruna. Grant Kittelson
checked in with the Generals.

Brad Bradley's team comes into the
their state semi-final game with a 9
and 3 record. The Generals have gotten
to this point in the season and while
some teams would be satisfied with that
accomplishment William Campbell is not.

(BRADLEY BITE:10:18)

An advantage that the Generals have is
that they new they would play this
year's state semi at home a luxuary
they did not enjoy a year ago.

(BRADLEY BITE: 9:38)

(BROGGINS BITE: 18:11)

(STANDUP: THe team that will come to
Naruna on Saturday is Surry County, the
Cougars have lost 2 games this, their

first set-back came on the opening week
of the season, their only other loss
was to Franklin, the team that knocked
William Campbell out of the playoffs a
year ago.

(BRADLEY:9:17)

the Generals last won a state
championship back in 2 -thousand and 2.
Grant Kittelson Friday Football Extra.

Rural Retreat and J.I. Burton met in
last year's state semifinals at
UVA-Wise. The Raiders eeked out a one
point win over the Indians, but Quinton
Hensley's team has learned from the
loss and hopes to turn the tables at
Community Stadium.

QUINTON HENSLEY/RURAL RETREAT HEAD
COACH:

The Indians have made the most of their
13th playoff appearance since 1986.
Junior quarterback Matthew Heldreth can
beat teams with both his legs and his
arm, while all state receiver a year
ago, Jonothan Hawkins is more than
capable.

And Rural Retreat's depth on defense
has shown on the way to a 5th regional
title.

QUINTON:

The Indians have never reached a state
title game. Travis >>

OQ=in just a moment << The Player of the Week for Friday

Football Extra comes from William
Campbell, where Brad Bradley has his
Generals once again looking another
state title. The last time William
Campbell brought home the state title
they had a running back by the name of
Cedric Peerman. His younger brother is
playing as true freshman for Coach
Bradley. But the player of the week
who ran hard for William Campbell last

week is Matt Barbour. The Senior Wide
Reciever, yes we did say wide receiver,
did most of his damage on the ground
last week. Grant Kittelson has more.

William Campbell won it's 4th straight
regional title with a win over
Riverheads. The Generals went to their
ground game to earn a 33 to 10 victory.
But the main runner who got into the
endzone was a Wide Receiever. Matt
Barbour scored 3 times and racked up
over 70 yards rushing from his wideout
position. Barbour also proved he can
do what his normally expected from a
receiver in gaining over 40 yards.

(BARBOUR: 16:29)

His 3 scores weren't from in
close, Barbour scored on runs of 23, 16
and 14 yards

(BARBOUR:16:29)

(BRADLEY:12:14)

The Senior had time to build up
for his performance he had been on the
sidelines with an injury he suffered in
the Gretna Game.

(BARBOUR: 17:11)

Having Barbour back on the field
provides much more to the Generals than
just his play.

(BRADLEY:11:30)

(BRADLEY:13:00)

(Standup: Barbour also returned to his
position of Linebacker for William
Campbell and recorded 8 solo tackles
and was part of a defense that forced 3
turnovers including a fumble recovery
by Barbour.

The Generals will be back on the
field Saturday in Naruna as they take
on Surry County. Grant Kittelson
