don't think too much about it.

EITHER YOU MINE IT OR SOME COMPANIES
DISTILL IT FROM SEA WATER.

VO-The Commonwealth of Virginia buys
nearly three hundred thousand tons of
salt each year; that's twenty million
dollars' worth.

salt is a little bit more complicated
than people think . VDOT has developed
three different methods to treating
Virginia roads.

VO- First, there's your regular,
run-of the mill salt that gets
sprinkled all over the roads; sometimes
abrasive is added to help traction.

Then there's brine. It's a
mixture of salt and water which gets
sprayed to the road early in the storm.

Plus you have your salt coated
with liquid calcium choloride for
nights where tempertures get into the
low twenties and teens.

IS A LITTLE MORE THAN JUST PUTTING ICE
MELT ON A SIDEWALK; THERE IS SOME

safer. And the workers who get it from
the salt yard to the roads don't worry
much about the science either.

flight from Baltimore that slid off the
runway and onto a nearby street.

It was trying to land in heavy
wind and snow.

The F-A-A says Southwest flight 12-48
crashed through the airport's boundary
fence and stopped on a nearby street.

An aircraft mechanic at Midway said the
plane's nose gear had collapsed, at
least one of the engines was damaged.
The jet appeared two vehicles.

GRAPHIC=Hutcherson Lynchburg mayor Carl Hutcherson has

asked for a leave of absence from his
preaching duties at Trinity United
Methodist Church.

Hutcherson was indicted by a
federal grand jury last week on charges
including bank fraud and Social
Security fraud.

The Virginia Conference of the
United Methodist Church says
Hutcherson's leave will be effective
immediately.

If he's convicted, the church
likely will have him removed
permanently.

demanded money.

He was armed with a tire iron,
grabbed the money in the cash register

guilty to the crimes.

hostage.

Tuesday that showed Ronald Shulz, an
electrician from Alaska sitting with
his hands tied behind his back.

If today's report is confirmed, he
would be the first American hostage
killed in more than a year.

There was another suicide bombing
today. Thirty-two people were killed
on a bus.

Another GROUP of hostages was
photographed in orange jumpsuits, as
their captors extended the deadline for
execution.

Typically, hostages in such garb have
ended up dead.

in the country is changing its name.

Governor Dummer Academy is named
after Willliam Dummer, a Massachusetts
governor who had the school built in
1763.

But now the boarding school is
dropping it's founder's name, and will
simply be known as The Governor's
Academy.

Administrators feared the old name
might have discouraged students from
applying.

Current students may get to choose
what the diploma says... that is:
whether they are Dummer graduates ...or
not.

head coach of the University of
Colorado Football team and he's not
doing it willingly. Barnett accepted a
buy-out from the school worth 3 million
dollars after coaching the Buffalos for
7 seasons. Colorado finished the
season 7 and 5, but got waxed in their
final 3 games by a score of 130 to 22.

given to the State's top Football
player according to a panel of Sports
Journalists around the Commonwealth,
including our own Mike Stevens.

They handed out the award this
evening in Richmond, the three
finalists: Virginia's D'Brickashaw
Ferguson, Richmond quarterback Stacey
Tutt, and Virginia Tech's Darryl Tapp.
The winner was Tapp who led the Hokies
to a 10 and 2 overall record and an
appearance in the first ever A-C-C
title game. He is the 4th straight Tech
player to win the award. Tapp received
11 of a possible 15 first place votes.

the U-S Capitol.

And that's exactly what they're
calling it.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert and
an eight-year-old boy from Santa Fe
pushed a button tonight lighting the
tree.

Hastert noted that it's a
Christmas tree, not a "holiday

tree," as it has been known since the
90's.

It has also become a symbol of
Congress' resolve on the matter of
holiday wishes.

The 65-foot tree is from New
Mexico.

It will be lit every night at dusk
