(END SOT) Earlier in the week.... an Iraqi

insurgent group released a video of a
man they said they were holding
hostage...and referred to - as "the
American security consultant . "

Now they say - via an internet posting
...they have executed him. Its

authenticity could not be independently
verified and the White House says it
cannot confirm the claim.

The statement did not identify the
alleged hostage, and provided no
evidence to back up their words - but
the group said proof of the execution
in pictures would come later.

After a lull of several months,
kidnappings here have surged. Two weeks
ago -- four Westerners were abducted in
Baghdad...an American, a Briton, and
two Canadians...working for a Christian
aid group in Iraq.

Their captors -- a different group -
extended a deadline and are now
threatening to execute them by this
weekend. The hostages have made pleas
on tape - saying they will be freed if
American and British soldiers leave
Iraq as soon as possible.

CHARLIE D'AGATA/BAGHDAD:

KIDNAPPING WESTERNERS IS JUST ANOTHER
WEAPON FOR INSURGENTS.... AS THEY CRANK
UP THE THREATS AND VIOLENCE AHEAD OF
NEXT WEEK'S ELECTIONS.

The latest attack -- aimed at Iraqi
civilians -- struck in the very heart
of downtown Baghdad this morning

killing dozens.

The passengers were families heading to
Nasiriyah....

"I TRIED TO STOP HIM, BUT HE PUSHED ME

US officials had warned of random
attacks in the lead-up to the country's
elections --- and today --- their fears

were confirmed. Charlie D'Agata, CBS

grad Tony Womack was sent from the
Yankees to the Reds.

Womack spent just one season in
the Big Apple after helping lead the
Cardinals to a pennant two seasons ago.

He started last year at second
base before being moved to the
outfield.

GRAPHIC=BAM College football's bowl season

gets underway in a week and a half.
The Orange Bowl though won't be played
until January third. But Penn State
held its bowl media day yesterday.
Only Joe Paterno wouldn't allow any
players to show up. Joe Pa had a very
logical explanation in advance of his
team's game with Florida State.

They're lined up at the National
Zoo to see Tai Shan, the panda cub.

He's recently taken an interest
in playing with a plastic ball.

Tai Shan- -whose name means
"Peaceful Mountain"- -has begun
mimicking his Mom, pretending to eat
bamboo. The baby is still nursing, so
his consumption of bamboo is still
several months off.

The cub's parents are on a
ten-year loan to the National Zoo from
China.
