Friday Football Extra

ANCHOR ON CAM MIKE ON CAM

GRAPHIC=FFE Good evening everybody and

welcome to Friday Football Extra.

Tonight we present our annnual
State Champioship preview show.

Not only will we take a look at
the teams still fighting for a state
title, but we're going to take you on a
stroll down memory lane with a couple
of Friday Football Extra flashbacks -
with the help of not only the late Roy
Stanley, but Steve Mason.

Travis Wells and Grant Kittelson
are of course here as well tonight as
they have been each and every Friday
this season.

GRAPHIC=WILLIAM CAMPBELL/ J.I. BURTON We'll begin tonight in division

one and work our way up to division
four. The division one championship
will be played at JMU's Bridgeforth
Stadium tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 as
William Campbell takes on J.I. Burton.

The Generals under head coach
Brad Bradley are both battle tested and
playing with a chip on their shoulders.

in the state.

They will face a J.I. Burton
squad with just one setback all year.
It's a team that topped Rural Retreat
last Saturday on the road to make it to
this point and one that played for a
state title last year.

The Generals have been practicing
this week on the carpet at Liberty - a
surface similar to the one they will
play on at James Madison.

The turf will be fast and the
conditions will be chilly.

J.I. Burton may not be able to handle
all the speed William Campbell
possesses - especially on turf.

We won't find that out until
Saturday afternoon, but in 2002 -
Applachia found out the hard way that
speed kills.

William Campbell completed a
perfect 14 and 0 season that year with
a 70-to-nothing rout in the division

(END SOT) The Generals and their coaches joined

hands with the community in raising the
state championship trophy. The early
Chrsitmas present represented a holiday
spirit flowing all game long.

((:))

And as the Generals took the James
Madison field hand in hand, it was
clear that Cedric Peerman would answer
the bell in the first half. The junior
running back's four rushing touchdowns
in the first two quarters led the
Generals into intermission up
28-nothing.

((:))

William Campbell's overshadowed defense
forced Appalachia into six turnovers,
including four interceptions. The
Bulldogs were held to 224 yards of
total offense.

((:))

The Generals churned out 555 yards.
Peerman scored three TD's in the second
half and let other blue chippers like

Vernon Vassell have the spot light. His
touchdown sprint made it 56-0 with 11
minutes left in the game as Campbell
rushed for 441 yards.

While the winners of four state title
in the 90's in shock, the Generals
celebrated by giving their coach a cold
bath but nothing could chill the warm
emotions.

((:))

((:))

Coaches mom recognized the long wait
was over and the Salem coaching staff
that brought Bradley along
congradulated him on William Campbell's
70 to nothing state championship win

STANDUP: Magenbauer has told his team
all year to play 4 quarters of Salem
Spartan football. They've done that
successfully for the first 13 games of
the season, having won 4 games by less
than 10 points. The Spartan defense
has been a big part of that, they

as to who was the home team in this
battle.

Salem also did a better job of
neutralizing the rain and mud in the
first half by forcing three Sherando
turnovers, still the Spartans trailed
with 3 minutes left in the half.

But R.J. Beckwith took care of that
with this strike over the middle to
John Hancock giving Salem a 7-to-6 lead
at halftime.

((R.J. BECKWITH:))

((JOHN HANCOCK:))

The Spartans were the recipients of 2
good omens to start the third quarter,
first - Paul Jackson rips off a huge
gain right of the middle, but the
Sherando tacklers rips the ball loose -
finally the Salem would recover.

A couple of minutes later the sun came
out and Hancock went back in the zone,
hauling in another Beckwith toss over
the middle to make it 14-to-6 Salem
with 7:21 left in the third.

But this one was far from finished - as
Sherando comes back and moves the ball
down inside the Salem 10.

But the Spartans defense would throw
down a goal line stand of the ages
stopping the Warriors on 2 straight
downs from the one to preserve their
lead.

((RICKY EUBANK:))

The unselfish Spartans then unleased
freshman Denis Haley up the middle, and
his 20 yard gallop seemed to out the
game away making it 20-to-6 with 7:20
to go.

But on another fourth and goal Kelly
Washington finds Brad Payton for the

short TD chopping the lead to 20-to-12.

But there would be no last second
comeback on this day! Jamie Garst seals
the deal with the interception, and
Salem proves that the third time is the
charm beating Sherando 20-to-12 for the
Division 4 state crown.
