Consumer Watch 7 Banner If you decorate for the holidays, keep
in mind that a careless mistake can
cause serious damage.

LOVELY TO LOOK AT -- A JOY TO BEHOLD.
DECORATIONS HELP MAKE THE HOLIDAYS

BRIGHT. BUT THEY CAN BE DANGEROUS --
EVEN DEADLY IF CONSUMERS AREN'T
CAREFUL.

---SOT---

Use common sense. Pay attention, so
your traditions aren't ruined by
tragedy

and fires.

---STANDUP ----

THE U-S CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY
COMMISSION SAYS EVERY YEAR THOUSANDS OF
PEOPLE

ARE TREATED FOR FALLS, CUTS, SHOCKS AND
BURNS CAUSED BY DECORATIONS.

----TRACK ----

CHRISTMAS TREES ALONE ACCOUNT FOR 300
FIRES, RESULTING IN 10 DEATHS AND 7

MILLION DOLLARS IN PROPERTY DAMAGE.

WHEN BUYING A TREE - FRESHNESS IS MOST
IMPORTANT. THE HIGHER THE MOISTURE

CONTENT THE LESS LIKELY IT IS TO DRY
OUT AND BECOME A FIRE HAZARD. AN

ARTIFICIAL TREE SHOULD BE FIRE
RESISTANT.

---SOT---

Christmas trees can go up in flames in
less than 10 seconds.

---TRACK---

OTHER DECORATIONS CAN BE A HAZARD.
CANDLES SHOULD NEVER BE LEFT BURNING

UNATTENDED OR AROUND PETS OR CHILDREN.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS SHOULD BE APPROVED BY A
NATIONAL TESTING LABORATORY.

SO CHECK THE LABEL.

---SOT---

Make sure there aren't any frayed wires
or broken sockets or any fuses out.

---TRACK ---

DO NOT USE INDOOR LIGHTS OUTDOORS.
AVOID OVERLOADING EXTENSION CORDS. AND
TURN

LIGHTS OFF WHEN YOU GO OUT OR GO TO
BED.

A LITTLE CAUTION WILL HELP KEEP THE
HOLIDAYS HAPPY AND SAFE.

IN WASHINGTON I'M TARA MERGENER.

These bins have been filling up
for the past several weeks.

If you are interested in picking
up a stocking, just come by the WDBJ
studios on Hershberger Road in Roanoke.

Then choose what age group and
gender you want to give to, fill your

stocking up with the appropriate gifts,
and return the completed stocking to
the station.

Next week the Salvation Army will
distribute those stockings.
